Baby Names

I wish SO liked something other than...

EMMA!

Sorry to vent about this but I need to let it out. This has been the name that we have had picked out for a while & now I'm not so sure anymore. I didn't like it then I did. I know it's VERY popular & that doesn't bother me but I personally don't know any IRL. I just wish I could decide whether I like/dislike it or just get SO to pick another name. Being 34 weeks I think our time has ran out to find anything else.

Re: I wish SO liked something other than...

  • My husband is stuck on the name Emma and is having a hard time considering anything else.  I really like the name, I just don't like the popularity.  We had talked about Adriana when I was pregnant with DS, and now he's not as fond of it but still likes it.  Just not as much as Emma.

  • There are worse names, honestly.  Yes, it's incredibly popular.  And yes, I think you WILL know 10 others after you choose it for your daughter (which has happened to us with Vivian).  But your first child has a very popular but classic name, and I think Emma fits with it.  If it's what you truly love, go for it.

That said, I think you still totally have time at 34 weeks.  Have you played with nymbler?  I went through about 10 pages of suggestions before I started finding a few I liked for this baby.

ITA.  Nymbler is a great site.  I know Emma is pretty popular but I think it is a great name.

  • I think if you are unsure, you should continue your name search. That way, if you don't find something you like better than Emma, you might be more sure of your choice. If you do find something you like better, that's good too and you'll be glad you didn't settle.

  • I don't see anything wrong with Emma. It's popular because it's a beautiful, classic name that is easy to spell, say and remember. You need to decide if YOU like it or not. If not, then look for another name.

  • I think Emma is a great name. Oddly enough, the only Emma I know IRL is in her 80's. I think it's a beautiful, classy name that will never go out of style and for that reason, I would have no trouble using it even though it is so popular right now. Good luck deciding!
  • Agree with the others on this - it is a very nice name - if it is the one you and H love, use it. If you really aren't sure - you should look around some more (you still have time!) and create lists you and H can go through. If you find something you like better - cool. If not, use Emma :)

    Good luck!

  • Emma is a fine but extremely popular name, just like your son's. If you don't love it, your time hasn't run out, and you can still decide on something you and your DH BOTH love.

  • Thanks ladies! Your opinions really helped & yes I to love the name, I guess I was just unsure. But I think we will stick with it. Thanks again!!

  • Psh, we didn't even DECIDE on DD's name until 34 weeks. I promise, time hasn't run out. Six weeks is plenty of time.

I think it's worth re-evaluating. Sometimes you have to compromise and use a name you like but don't love; however, the baby belongs to both of you, and you get equal say.

ETA: I meant to say, we didn't even come up with DD's name. Definitely didn't decide until she was born.

  • Oh and I forgot to say, DS didn't have a name until 2 days after he was born.  You still have time :)
  • I love the name Emma, but I don't love how popular it is.
