Hello!
I'm a FTM and my showers have ended, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with everything. I know I need to wash a lot of this stuff, but what specifically should I wash? I don't wanna wash all her clothes because I know she may not wear some. Also what would you wash them with? I've heard Tide is not good, and thats what we was our clothes in. Also, what's the best way to get bottles and pacificers ready? And is there anything else I may need to clean or wash. TIA!!
Re: What to wash?
I had my shower too and I washed everything that I liked the best (bc you KNOW that will be the first thing you put him/her in) and I washed everything that didn't come with a receipt or I absolutely couldn't return because, at that point, you cant take it back so you might as well try to wear it! And, we wash in tide and I heard the same thing... I got some Dreft at Walmart (for babies specifically) and washed It all with that!
I don't know of there's a right or wrong way of going about this, but here's what I washed:
-newborn onesies
-a few newborn outfits (my family is known for big babies... So if Aria follows suit, she won't fit his very long)
-all 0-3 onesies and outfits
-all crib sheets, receiving blankets, changing pad covers, and swaddlers
-a few baby blankets (we were given like 36828215182345 at our shower... I picked 4 or 5 of the softest, and washed those)
Basically, I washed anything that could touch babys bare skin in the first few weeks/months. (disclaimer: ive been a nesting freak... So this might be overkill... I'm a FTM, so I don't know)
I don't like Dreft very well, so I didn't use it. We were give two bottles of different "free and clear" detergents at our shower, so that's what we're going to use. (GIANT bottles... At this rate, by the time we use it all, she won't really need it anymore!)

I washed anything that would touch baby's skin. So all the covers for the swing, bouncy seat ect as well as her blankets, clothes and bedding (and cloth diapers). We used anything that was free and clear or that said dye and fragrance free. It doesnt have to be a special baby soap. I just buy the kirkland brand free and clear from costco and wash all our stuff in it.
Bottles and pacifiers you can sterilize by washing with dish soap and then boiling.
I also meant to add that we haven't sterilized any bottles/nipples/paci's yet. If you want the honest truth, I completely forgot about them!
Guess I know what I'm doing today! (I'm just going to boil them for a bit. I think, if you google it, there should be how-to's online)

Well, this is my second, so I didn't have any shower gifts. But even with DS, I didn't have an excess of clothes. I've bought quite a few clothes for DD up to size 6-9 months. I laid them all out by size to appraise what I have. I decided that I didnt' have too much of anything, so I then I washed all the newborn and 0-3 month size clothes. I also washed the Brest Friend cover, the bassinet sheets, and the blankets I plan on using.
I used Tide Free and Clear, which is what we've used for all of our clothes since DS was born. It might be overkill to use it for all of our clothes, but I figure that we will be handling the baby a lot, so she will be exposed to whatever is on our clothes. Besides, I'm lazy and don't sort our laundry very well, so it's easier to use one detergent for everything.
I haven't messed with bottles or pump parts or anything like that yet. They're still in storage. I'll probably get them out in the next week or two. I plan to run them through the dishwasher and then boil them. I then run them through the dishwasher after each use and boil them only periodically.
I washed everything that will touch baby's skin in the first few weeks. Clothes, bedding, Boppy covers, burp clothes, towel/washclothes, car seat cover, bouncy seat cover, etc. It is totally not necessary (and often not recommended anymore) to use Dreft. Dreft actually has perfumes in it that can irritate baby's sensitive skin. Any free and clear regular detergent is fine. I just use free and clear for our clothes too.
As far as sterilizing. A pot of boiling water works well. Read the packaging on your items. Some (like playtex drop-in bottles) specifically state not to sterilize them. I also love the Medela Microwave bags. They are not very expensive and since they can be reused a bunch of times they last quite a while.
Wait so if I'm using a brand new pump do I need to wash/ sterilize/ whatever it and all the parts??? I guess I just automatically figured I would need to for bottles and BM storage containers but didn't think about the pump/ parts too..
I don't mean the actual pump, just the parts the come in contact with milk.
