Help us help DS with this please.

DS definitely has quite a bit of echolalia. He loves to use phrases from tv shows and movies. He currently can't run around unless also repeating "Go Koko" (from Chuggington) over and over. However, sometimes it seems like he uses movies as a way to work through things that bother him. He always seems to latch on to the more disturbing parts of movies and act them out until he is no longer bothered by it. For instance, at 2.5, he watched Cars for the first time and was terrified of the combine scene. However, by the afternoon after watching it, he had claimed Frank the Combine as his own and had a grand old time roaring and chasing us around. He loved Frank so much that he insisted on a Frank the Combine party. His favorite character in almost all movies is the bad guy that he was originally scared of. Today, the Lion King was on the Disney channel. He has latched on to the scene where Scar kills Mufasa and is acting it out over and over, then pretending to be Simba and working himself close to tears about how much he misses his Daddy. I just don't even know what to think about this. He was obviously really affected by the movie and this is how he is expressing it, but what do we do?

Re: Help us help DS with this please.

  • Oh, and I'd like to add that we currently have him distracted, but I don't feel like that really solved anything, and since he gets stuck on things like this, it is likely to come up quite a few more times, so a better plan of action than, "Hey, want to play video games?" would be helpful.
