Re: 2 week appointment? Is that the norm?

  • I only have a 6 week appointment myself. I'm wondering if the 2 week follow ups are for those that may have had some sort of issue during their hospital stay?

  • My last c-section was almost 5 years ago, but I remember I had a 2 weeks appointment.  I didn't have any issues with my c-section.  I think it depends on the doctor.

  • My OB doesn't do 2 week appts. I went in at 6 weeks just like with my vaginal birth.

  • My ob said he will be checking on me daily during my stay at the hospital (5-7 days) and then the next appt is at 6 weeks.
  • I had a nurse come visit at my home around 2 weeks. I didn't see the OB again until 6 weeks.

  • My OB office makes all c/s patients come in at 2wks and 6wks. At 2wks they just check your incision for any infection.  At 6wks they do bloodwork and uterus check/pap. It really varies by OB office

  • I have a 2 week appt and a 6 week appt.  I am only one week post csection so not sure what my OB will do at either appt but I go this coming friday for my 2 week.

  • My OB doesn't do the 2wk check-up, either. I actually ended up going in to be seen about 2wk pp with DD#1 because I thought my incision might be infected but it turned out that it wasn't. I would kind of like that 2wk check-up for peace of mind, but my OB will certainly see me at any time if I have a concern about how I'm recovering, so I guess it doesn't make too much of a difference. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what to look for as far as what is "normal" during recovery and what might be cause to go in.

I am shocked at the number of doctors that don't. Any other surgery you have a follow appointment a week or two later.

It isn't the norm, but is should be for every woman, not just c-sections. Post partum care is the US is pathetic.

I think many don't because either their staples are removed in the hospital, or staples are not used at all. A good reason? No, but I think it factors in.

Add maternity care and women's healthcare in general to your list, and I would have to agree with the bolded.

  • I think it depends on the practice. I've seen 2 different doctors at different practices (2 c/s). One checked me at 2 weeks, the other at 6 weeks.
  • I've had a 2 week appointment both times followed by a 6 week appointment.  I believe it's just to check and see that your scar is healing properly.

Oh definitely. The whole system leaves a lot to be desired.

Well, imo, it seems that "maternal" healthcare is really "fetal" healthcare and once the fetus is out who gives a damn about the mother?  DD and I were both checked by the nurse at our PP visit at my home. DD also had two visits to a pedi in the 6 week PP period whereas I only saw a nurse and then five minutes with an OB at 6 weeks. She only checked my incision at that appointment and asked how I was doing. No internal. It seems I still did better than a lot of women.

Once the baby is out? Or, at all? Don't you know that a healthy baby is ALL THAT MATTERS? Confused

Well, you have to keep the mother going until the baby is out. LOL!

  • I had a one week post c/s to have staples removed, another one a week later because I had to be on an antibiotic because of some swelling and oozing at the staple holes, and then the 6 week also.

  • Because of PIH that lingered after my delivery (I ended up staying a day longer in the hospital in order to get my BP controlled with meds), I had an appt once a week for 6 weeks PP. At each appt my BP was checked as well as my incision.

  • Wow, I had no idea that people didn't get a 2 week checkup. That's pretty sad with major abdominal surgery. DS and I both had 2 week appts. We actually went from one to the other.

  • My post op appt was a week after the c/s.  Then I had my 6 week appt later.
