Has anyone done a cleanse for health?

I was thinking about doing one, I read several articles lately that suggest a cleanse is good for clearing everything out - just for health reasons/not weight-loss.

If you have done one, which one/do you recommend it?

Were there any side effects?  Thanks for sharing!

  • Your body is designed to clean itself out...no special cleanse is necessary. The best thing you can do for your health and "cleanse" your body is to eat a healthy diet.

  • I did the norovirus cleanse about a month ago, does that count??

Just kidding. I did do a 7 day detox a few years back. It basically involved taking huge amounts of fiber and drinking something nasty every morning. Basically I spent a lot of time on the toilet for the first 4 days of it, but that was about all that happened. I asked a GI doctor about them later and he said they're just a gimmick. The second you finish the "cleanse" everything is back to the way it was.

  • I recently did a 3 day cleanse.  I spent 3 weeks traveling through the south.  When I got home I felt incredibly bloated and uncomfortable.  I did the Shakeology cleanse.  It wasn't as bad as I thought!  I had a shake 3 times a day, 2 pieces of fruit, 2 cups of green tea, salad with unlimited veggies and 4 oz of protein for dinner.  I also had a couple handfuls of pecans.  My bloat went away and it was great for getting me back on track! :)

Do you not have a liver or kidneys? What exactly do you think you are going to clean out?

This. Eating clean, non-processed food and lots of water is all you need to do to cleanse.  It is healthier, cheaper and will provide the same results of any of the gimmick cleanses out there.

  • I did a 30-day cleanse two years ago and I can't wait to do it again once I'm done BFing. It was a product called CleanseSmart by Renewlife. I noticed it got my digestive system back in order and I felt great. They also make a cleanse for those who haven't done a cleanse before called FirstCleanse, I believe. (I also did their CandiGone cleanse because I was getting a yeast infection every month when I menstruated. It fixed me right up. Sorry if TMI lol)

EDIT: The only side effect I remember is having to go to the bathroom more (#2 after meals, so 2x/day unless you have a large breakfast- in that case 3x/day) but I don't really consider that a side effect as it got me "regular" again and I've heard many times that it's healthy to go after each meal

  • I did Clean (by Alejandro Junger). I didn't do it really for the cleansing effects--as others have said, I believe that eating lots of fruits and veggies and drinking tons of water will clean you out pretty effectively. I did it because I have a lot of stomach/GI issues, and doctors haven't really been able to pinpoint what might be causing them. I was pretty convinced that I had a food intolerance, and Clean is essentially an elimination diet. You add foods slowly back in at the end.

The first few days weren't easy, but I felt awesome after that. You still eat 1500 calories or so on clean--it is structured as a smoothie for breakfast (no supplements--just fruits, almond milk, etc.); a lunch of veggies and very lean protein; and either a soup or a smoothie for dinner. You can have snacks if you absolutely must, but mindfulness is encouraged. If you google Alejandro Junger Clean food lists, there are some really good resources related to what it allows and doesn't. I know added sugar, gluten and caffeine are the big ones that aren't permitted.

I'm actually really mad at myself that I completely fell off the wagon afterward, and I plan to do it at least once a year after I'm done nursing my soon-to-be-born baby. I really did feel incredible.
