Drugs after baby is out to relax? (claustrophobic)

I am getting ready for C-section #2-- the last one was scheduled due to his size, and I mentioned my claustrophobia, etc to the anesthesiologist before the surgery, and he told me that if I needed something he could give it to me after he was out. I was doing okay, but am pretty sure he still gave me something...I remember DS coming out and briefly seeing him, then don't remember a thing about them sewing me up ...I 'came to' in recovery and was a little out of it for the next few hours (which was a good thing bc it took 4+ hours for my spinal to wear off) but coherent. I asked my ob if she knows if I was given anything, and she's not sure, but said maybe versed.

I'm not sure if i want to get the drugs again or not...I don't like my memory of that day being fuzzy. But, i'm worried about how long it will take to get stitched back up and freaking out while their doing it (knowing that the baby is out, to the nursery, whatever). If you were given drugs, do you know what they were? Do you remember everything? In one way it was kind of nice to not have the anxiety but am wondering if there is something that will take the edge off but not cloud my memory.

A side note, if you are claustrophobic, were you OK during/after the surgery w/out drugs? Again, I can't remember much so any experiences are helpful!

  • I was given Versed. I am a nurse so I asked. It wasn't due to claustrophobia, but due to the shakes as a side effect of the epi. I wished they had not, because I was pretty loopy and don't remember super clearly meeting my son for the first time. I would talk to your doctor (or get an appt with anesthesia) about your options. A small amount of a benzodiazepine like Ativan might be a good choice for you.

  • I do remember everything about those days.  They do load up your IV with pain meds after the baby is out, things like dilaudid and toridol.  Mention your reaction when you go in and see if they can give you something else.

  • I was given drugs, but not sure what it was. During the c-section I felt like I was having a panic attack. The anesthesiologist said that after the baby was out he was going to give me something to make me feel good. Whatever it was worked. I felt good. But also no memory of being sewed up and taken to my room. My mom said that they rolled me by the nursery and I saw LO and talked to all of our family that was at the hospital. I don't remember any of that. I was out of it for about 3 hours.

  • I am claustrophobic too and had my first baby by c-section on 1/23/12 so I understand your anxiety!  The anesthesiologist came into the prep room and met with me to go over everything.  I told her I was feeling nauseous due to not eating (mine was scheduled at 4:30pm so I hadn't eaten since 8am that morning).  She gave me an anti-nausea med which helped me with the anxiety.  I would recommend this as that drug did not affect my mental state but yet calmed me down (as opposed to an anxiety drug which could affect your memory or experience of the moment).

Also, once the spinal was in, I felt immediate relaxation which also helped with the claustrophobia.  I felt relaxed and did not feel anxiety about not feeling my lower body or about being strapped onto a table.  The stitching up goes pretty quickly and I had no problems at all!

Good luck, and again, I would recommend asking for the anti-nausea drug which should also help with your claustrophobia and get you through without clouding your memory.

  • I was extremely nervous about the epi and was going to go med free just because I was worried about the side effects, like the shaking. However we had to have an emergency c section and obviously I had no choice. I surprised myself that i was very calm because I knew what to expect. My DH saw me shaking and freaked a little and was asking the doctor what is going on and I told him it's OK it's a side effect. I was coherant during the entire surgery, heard DS cry and I spoke to the doctors about VBAC while they sawed me up (They must have thought I was BSC). But I was clear as any day as the meds they gave me did not make me feel drugged at all. Once the drugs started wearing off and I felt more pain I was taking percocets and those made me feel loopy but that was a day or two after surgery so I stopped taking them and just took advil.
