Re: Teachers and DC in the summer

  • Nope.  One of the HUGE perks of being a teacher is having most of the summer off to spend with LO.  I would love to be a SAHM though; however, I could definitely understand the parents who didn't operate well under toddlerhood rule all day.  I know some teachers who send their kiddos because they have to pay the daycare anyway.  Last year they held our spot without paying!!!  I hope they'll do that again.  If we have to pay, I might be singing a different tune.

  • Nope! I love to enjoy the summer with my LOs.
  • Nope! If I had to pay, I might send him one or two days (mornings only) because he loves hanging out with his buddies, but our place holds  his spot for free.
  • Yes. She goes at least a few days a week during the summer. If she didn't we'd still have to pay for her spot over the summer.

  • They'll go in June (we get out around the 20th), I'll drop them to 3 days a week in July (consistency, and I'm writing a whole new course and moving rooms this year, so I need time to work), then probably nothing in August.

Three reasons for us: consistency for them (it's hard to go back in Sept. after being home for months), they love it, and hell, it's my vacation too and I need some time alone!

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • No.  They will stay home with me.  Our school will hold their spots with just a $100 deposit.
  • DD went about 1x per week last summer and that worked well for us.  We don't have to pay to hold a spot.  She loves it there though, and it was good to keep her familiar with the routine there.  I liked having time off and still got plenty of time with her the other 6 days of the week.

  • I haven't decided yet.  The daycare will only hold our spot for free if they don't have anyone on the waiting list (which means we will probably be paying).

DD is 15 months old so will be about 18 months when I get out of school.  She loves her friends and her teachers and I am not sure if it would be very fair for me to take her away from them.  I may take her Tuesday and Thursday or something like that.

On the other hand, I never ever send her to daycare if they are open and my school is closed.  I look forward to any break from school so that I can have extra time with her.

It is going to be a tough decision but I will probably talk to her teachers and come up with a good plan that works that best for my sweet girl :)

  • I plan on keeping DS home with me during the summer as long as DC will hold his spot.

  • DH is a teacher and will be staying home with her. Our DC lets us unenroll her and pay $100 down to hold her spot for when we come back in the fall. Saves us thousands of dollars!

This exactly.  I plan to grocery shop or clean, but mostly it's so it's still routine when school rolls around again in the fall.

But three things remain: faith, hope and love; the greatest of these is love. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • Nope. Our daycare let's us pay our registration fees in June so that we have a spot held for her at when the school year starts.

  • No.  I'm so excited to be home with LO this summer.  We're going with a home daycare that is closed in the summer though.

  • Nope!  Unless I have a doctor appt or something...

Last summer she went maybe twice?

  • We have a nanny and will continue to use her over the summer.  We can't just cut out 2 months of her paycheck. :)

I agree with the last paragraph completely. I did a course last July, so DS went to daycare everyday (though I picked him up earlier than I do during the school year). I'm doing two courses this summer, so he'll still be going to DC in the summer. While I didn't work on my course every single moment last summer, it was nice to have the time to do it, and some time to just be with myself.

  • DS will go down to part time (two short days a week). This is what we did last year and it worked really well for our family and DC. It has a lot of pros for me: less money, consistency for DS, allowed me to get things done like doctor's appointments & house chores and held our DC spot.

  • For the first summer, we kept DS1 in school for the summer because I had a 3 week old at home and consistency would be best for him (and give me time with the baby).  We'd pick him up earlier/drop him off later, etc based on our schedules.

Last summer we did a split situation for six weeks and went to visit our families out of state the rest of the time.  For those weeks I had one day where both of them were in school and I could do what I needed to, one day alone with each of them so we could have some 1-on-1 time, and two days a week where all three of us were home.  It sounds complicated but it was good for us for a lot of reasons and we had a great summer!  Obviously, my DC is very flexible with how you can work summer programs.  I paid only for the time they were in school.

This summer is still up in the air.  We're adding one more baby to the mix in April and haven't figured out our summer plans yet.  :-)

  • On a regular basis - no.  We do not have to pay to have our spot held.  That said, I can call and arrange him to go if I need to run errands/go to the doctor/haircut.  I *might* do it once a month.

  • DH is a school counselor and is off all summer. I also have a good amount of time off. We have to pay the full time rate to hold her spot, so she goes half days three or four days/week.

It's a good balance: she gets to see her friends/get in outside time (which is really important with a two year old!) but we also get to see her a ton, too.

We take a few vacations during the summer and obviously pull her from school for those.

  • I'm teaching summer school in June, but for the month of July, I'll keep her home with me. I MIGHT send her a day a week or a couple of half-days so she won't become too 'strange' with her teacher and friends.

  • Nope. DD will stay home with me just like last summer, but we'll probably visit our home daycare a few times together, so she can see her friends and stay familiar with everyone. She has been home with DH since Thanksgiving. If she has a hard time going back in March, I may ask my daycare provider if she can take her one morning per week.

  • We've always sent DS 2 days a week over the summer (H and I are both teachers).  Its been great for him to stay familiar with the routine and with the DCP because he can be a bit clingy.  We also plan on sending the twins 2days/wk as well to get them used to it before jumping in full time in September (Plus, it will give H and I some time together!)  We usually drop off a little later (around 9-10) and pick up about 3, so its a shorter day, but still gives us some time to catch a movie or get lunch or something.
