cereal+BM in bottle for reflux?

DS, 3 mo, was diagnosed with silent reflux, so now he's on zantac. But, we are still having a difficult time with him spitting up, especially at night after i nurse him and lay him down. He's up usually 30-45 minutes later with milk all over him and the bed :( So many people keep telling me to add a little rice cereal to his bottle to help thicken the milk so it stays down. ALso heard the "possible myth" that it could keep him fuller longer so he wouldn't wake as often...Hes still getting up every 3 hrs, every 1-2 after 3/4 am. UGH! I just elevated his crib mattress to see if that will help. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has done this and if it helped at all?? Nervous to introduce anything else to him right now. He is EBF...

Re: cereal+BM in bottle for reflux?

  • I had a friend whos doctor recommended putting cereal in the bottle to help with reflux.  It really did help.  I would ask your doctor his/her opinion before doing anything but since your DS is 3 months old I do not think putting cereal in the bottle will hurt.  (they usually do not recommend putting cereal in the bottle, ever but with reflux it is different).  I would say if you give it a try and see a big improvement then it is worth it.  My DS had reflux until about 5 or 6 months (silent at first and then spitting up) and had a hard time sleeping flat on his back.  I never tried the cereal in bottle but I will say that when he slept in his Rock -n-play or carseat he would sleep sooo much better! Being on the include and snug really helped him.  It wasnt until he was older that he was able to transition to his crib or pnp (he is 11 months now).

  • same boat as you...and i dont agree that it would be a "serious choking hazard," as pp said. my baby is 8 weeks and has issues with spitting up...since her 1month appt, my pediatrician AND certified lactation consultants have recommended adding a little rice cereal to bm in a bottle to slow down the flow. when i bottle feed her i add just enough to slow down the flow, usually a teaspoon per 2 ounces. not enough to be of any nutritional value, and it dissolves into the breastmilk. what doesnt dissolve (which is almost none) doesnt pass through the nipple, and remains in the bottle. if your pediatrician okays it, why not try it?? she doesnt spit up as much, ive noticed.
