Abrupt end to breastfeeding :*(

I've had a severe ear infection since Monday that hasn't responded to mild (baby safe) antibiotics so the doctor has now prescribed Cipro, which from all of my research is *probably* okay, but there haven't been a lot of studies about it, so I think breastfeeding has to come to an end.

I really wanted to make it to the year mark.  DS has had breast milk since birth with no formula supplement.  It's been a rough road sometimes because I work full time and have to pump for a half hour every two hours at work to produce enough, then I nurse him once in the early morning and once in the evening.  I had no idea when I nursed him this morning it would be my last time.

I'm sitting here at work trying not to cry.

  • What about pumping while you're taking the medication and supplementing with formula and then when you're done with the meds you can go back to nursing?

  • Ditto to PP- that is exactly what I was going to post.  How long will you have to be on the meds?

  • I have to be on the meds for 10 days.  I've thought about doing what you suggest, but does exclusively pumping keep up the supply?

  • Pumps are not AS effective as baby, but I think it would keep your supply up enough to nurse when you are off the meds.  Heck, think of the mamas that ONLY pump.  I think it's worth a shot!

  • Honestly, at almost 10 months, babies are almost never affected by the medications in breastmilk. It's not the same as nursing a newborn where they're eating around the clock and have underdeveloped digestive systems. If I had been prescribed Cipro, I'd definitely keep nursing through it, not even bothering with the pumping/supplementing thing.

Did you try calling the Infant Risk line? They might be able to reassure you about it. (806)-352-2519

  • Thank you.  I did not know about that hotline.  I just spoke to them and was given a lot of information to think about.  The lady I spoke to says they get calls all the time about this drug and they feel it is safe, especially if I wait 3 hours after taking it to nurse or pump, which isn't a problem since I only take it twice daily.

Feeling much better about the situation. :)  thanks!

  • I started exclusively pumping at 7.5 months when my son self weaned. I'm still pumping with no formula supplement at 10 months.
  • Is it in the form of ear drops? I had the same thing about a month post-pardum. I still pumped. I checked with the pharmacist and the ear drops didn't enter the blood stream so it was fine. But either way, there's definitely days to work around it.

  • I had to take cipro about 3 weeks ago. I nursed right through it and LO had no problems whatever.
