Bassinet vs Rock & Play

Would you suggest a bassinet or the Rock and Play for the bedroom? With DD we used the pack n play, but it took up way too much room. We plan to transition into the crib around 4 months like we did with DD.

Re: Bassinet vs Rock & Play

  • I did not use the rock and play for nighttime sleep, but when we did use it, I really liked it and it it so much easier to fold up then putting away a pack and play. It's also really not that expensive, so it's not a huge investment piece. I use the r&p now for one of my daycare babies when the rest of the kids are eating lunch and plan on using it with this new one too.

  • The RNP is what DD slept in until she was 4-5mos old.  We didn't even have a crib until then.  I loved it!

  • Don't know what a Rock and Play is... we were planing on using the pack and play because we can bring it to other people's houses. I'd say if you can do the same thing with a Rock and Play you should get that instead of a bassinet. Get more use out of it...

  • We have a Rock 'n Play, bassinet, crib, and Pack 'n Play. The Rock 'n Play was a godsend for us! We bought it for DD when she was 2 months old and it was the very first night she slept 6 hours straight. She was sleeping through the night a month or so later up until the time she grew out of it.
  • Oh, and the Rock 'n Play is especially awesome for babies with reflux. DD spit up every single night she spent in her bassinet and only ever spit up once in her RNP. I know not all babies are the same, but it was probably the best $50 we spent on a baby item.
  • I have no idea what a rock and play is. Must google!

  • I've actually been asking myself the same question.  We used the PNP for DD, and yes, it took up alot of space.  I'm thinking about the RNP but I'm not 100% yet.  I wanted to get it with her but it wasn't as popular as it is now.

  • We used the Arms Reach Mini-cosleeper. It scoots right up next to the bed, is half the size of a normal pack and play and folds up like one to go. I like the idea of the Rock N Play too. This thing was great for breastfeeding and they slept in it for 4-6 months. I got ours in like new condition for $75 on Craigslist (they retail for $120-150)

  • I don't want to get a PNP because they are so big and all our family lives 18 hrs away so if we travel with the baby we will fly and can't even bring it.  I saw the rock n plays on amazon and they get great reviews, plus I love how they fold up, I'm thinking we will go that route.

  • We don't have a R&P, but we got an amazing PBK bassinet. It doesn't take up much space, and it has a storage shelf on the bottom to store burp cloths, extra diapers, extra wipes, clothes, and swaddling blankets. The baby will be in there for at least 3 months before we move him/her to the P&P.

  • I don't think that had rock & play's when I had my first two, but it sounds great.  I'm going to have to look that up!  How long can a baby stay in one?

It has a 25lb weight limit.  DD slept in it until she learned how to sit up because then she would rock herself and get a little crazy.

Hmmm...I don't know if it would be worth it to get then.  I have huge babies.  My son was 20 pounds at 3 1/2 months.

  • I used the RNP w my son after the cosleeper did not work for us. I believed he developed Brachycephaly (flat head syndrome) from using this for nighttime sleep. I didn't know any better and he did sleep like an angel in it. The RNP has a hard plastic in the back where the baby's head lays (much harder than any bassinet/pack n play surface).

I will be using it again for the occasional nap or so but after having to had my son in a cranio cap, I would much rather try to use any other alternative. And again, this was just my experience. He did sleep a lot on his back as per the recommendations and they told me it is possible that his skull was much softer than other babies which could have caused the brachycephaly.

  • RnP x100000. It was the best purchase we made for DS. We used ours until he was able to roll over. It has a weight limit of 25 lbs, but DS is only 24 lbs NOW at 18 months so it'd be hard to reach, I think.

  • Thanks ladies, I'm thinking that the RNP will go on the "must have" list for sure!

I started doing some research on this yesterday, and there were TONS of stories about this same thing. There were a lot of people whose babies developed flat head from it.

Just FYI, there's a place between the plastic and the cover where you can place extra stuffing. I did with mine and DD never had even the slightest flat spot and she slept in hrs all night and some of her naps. Babies get flats spots from bassinets and cribs also, especially now that it's recommended they sleep on their backs.
