Currently at 32 1/2 weeks. My twins are IUGR/SGA (one is severe). She is still growing at her own little curve 7oz every two weeks average. She is about 2lb14oz. My son had a growth spurt from last growth scan is now about 3lb 9oz (he had a 14oz gain in two weeks). I am delivering these two no later than 37w by c-section due to Cholestasis (mild and being controlled). My pressure is starting to go up and I'm also getting swelling (my belly dropped a few days ago and this has happened) was tested for PRe -E and "don't have it". I will be going for doctor's appointments now with NST's twice a week. (was going once a week). Both my kids have had 8/8 on their biophysicals and tracing on NST's are really good. They also noticed Lil girls fluid is a little lower (it's been normal till yesterday). So I know regardless we will be having these two in within the next month and with how they are growing he might make close or over 4lbs but she will probably be somewhere in the 3lb range.
They are healthy otherwise (they think the SGA) is actually from genetics. My egg donor was 5'1", 105lbs and not anything else.
Just wondering how 3-4 pounders usually do and (edited to add:over 32 weekers) with NICU stays??
We are at Brigham in Boston with a level 3 NICU. My sister was a preemie 22 years ago at 2lb 11oz born at 28w on the dot (she was actually just a feeder/grower, was breathing on her own pretty much after the first day and was moved to a level 2 NICU closer to my parents two weeks after birth) so I have a lot of faith my kids will do well considering they are already "larger" then her and over 4 weeks ahead gestationally. Just want to hear some reassurance I guess! My kids were "practicing" their breathing on U/S yesterday which tech said was really good! Also, haven't had steroid shots but doctor will administer if they deliver them before 34w and we have enough time.
Thanks!!
Re: Anyone have between 3-4 pounders?
Mine were born at 37 weeks at 4lbs 3oz and 3lbs14oz.
There were in the NICU for a week. They had some trouble eating and regulating body temperature, but nothing big. Size itself doesn't really determine anything in regards to a nicu stay
Good to know! I hope to obviously get them to at least 33w! which is a few days away!! Obviously aiming for whatever I can take but I know we are in a "decent" place gestationally! My doctor thought we would have a hard time making it to 28w due to my health issues (my heart was not doing well but stabilized at low normal). I should stop reading scary things about IUGR on the net also and listen to my doctor!
Thank you!! Both of you give me a lot of hope that my kids will do ok!
My twin girls were 33 weekers, and 4.6 lbs. and 4.12 lbs. Because I was able to get the steriods before, they were pretty much feeders/growers. My oldest was a 34 weeker, but had some slight breathing issues (didn't get steroids), so she required a CPAP for a few days. The twins were in the NICU for 3 weeks. One of the twins had a few more issues than the other (heart murmer that caused some concern, Grade I IVH, bladder reflux, and of course, jaundice and a couple of other minor things), but for the most part, everything was fine. They are doing great and totally on track with all milestones.
I think the 33 and 34 weekers (and above) typically do really well. They just need a little extra time. It sounds like you have a few other issues that you're dealing with, but looks like you're past the 32 week mark, so you're well on your way!
Good luck and hang in there!
They arrived at 36 weeks after PTL and bedrest for 14 weeks.
Mine were both small babies. Born at 36 weeks exactly, they were 2005 and 2010 grams (4 lb 10 oz).
I never got steroids because I never truly needed them. My son ran out of surfactant at 36 hours old and ended up in the NICU with holes in both lung walls and the sack around the heart. He was a "wimpy white boy", baby B, no steroids...all of the risk factors for RDS. He probably would have done better if I had received steroids. I really fought for them, but despite my best efforts to convince it did not happen. Steroids are not without potential negative side effects, and I understand why my MFM did not administer them. Every single neonatologist that took care of my son was unhappy. Even at 6 months when he landed in the PICU for severe RSV they were pissed he hadn't had steroids before birth. Ugh.
My daughter went home with us no problems. Our son was in the NICU/hospital for 10 days total.
Expect for them to stay....and hopefully they will both go home with you.
My Baby B was also IUGR, with no known cause or reason. I had an otherwise uneventful pregnancy, but I was hospitalized for a week at 32 weeks when they suspected that her umbilical cord was the issue and wasn't delivering the goods properly, after 4 ultrasounds they determined everything was fine and I was sent home. I received steroid shots during that time in case there was a problem with the cord they were going to deliver me right away. At 36 weeks 4 days they discovered that she had stopped growing for over a week so we delivered that day. They estimated the weights at 5lbs and 6lbs but they were born at 5lbs and 4lbs. There was no NICU time, they spent the first night and morning in the nursery but the next afternoon came into my room with me and stayed for the remaining 4 days. They kept us in the hospital for an extra day to make sure she didn't lose very much weight, and to monitor her an extra day, but everything was perfect!
She's still a tiny peanut, at 13 months old she's a whopping 17lbs, but her development is right on track and she still grows, just not on the "average". Any pregnancy complications can be scary and difficult, but it's all worth it in the end. Good luck!
I don't have any advice - just wanted to say I'm sending good thoughts your way for a safe and healthy delivery for all of you.
I would absolutely ask for the steroids now. It is much better to have them and not need them, than to not get them.
My girls were born at 31w6d. Caden was 2lb 11oz and Delaney was 4lb 1oz. Both were SGA, Caden was Very SGA. Caden's nervous system was very immature. She had bad reflux, and was overstimulated easily, which required more overall thought around her care. She couldn't be held for long periods of time, couldn't handle a lot of noise, and had trouble remembering to breathe. She was in the NICU for 6 weeks, Delaney for 5 weeks.
Ours were 35w1d and 3lbs8oz and 5lbs. They were delivered early after an US showed baby A had only grown a couple of ounces in a month (her cord flow was also a slight concern for a couple of weeks). Both were SGA and our little one was just over the Very Low Birthweight cutoff.
Baby B came right home (3 days) at 4lbs 12oz. Baby A stayed in the NICU as a feeder/grower for 17 days and came home a 4 lbs 4 oz. She had some minor suck/swallow/breathe issues and overstimulated easily, but is right on track now.
