How many outfits do we need? (PT related)

I'm trying to figure out how crazy I can go buying new summer clothes for T.  I think we have about 10 summer outfits (shorts/skirts) in a combination of her current size and one size up.  We're going to start PTing next month, but I have no idea how long to expect she'll be having regular accidents - whether she'll be mostly through it in a month or two (in her winter/spring clothes) or whether to expect regular accidents for many months where we would need more than 10 outfits to get through a week even in the summer.

I'm totally in love with the latest Gymboree collection, so I'm trying to decide whether to get the outfits in the size she'll be this summer (if we plan for even 4 months of regular accidents) or buy a bigger size and save the outfits for next year (if she'll be relatively accident-free within a month or two).

  • I think you'll need more then 10 outfits for a week.  We started potty training last May.  At first, my son could literally go through 8 pairs of pants in a day. I did a lot of laundry.  We had several trips in June and July that set him back a little. He went through a phase where he wouldn't poop in the potty, only in his pants.  I tossed some underwear and a pair or two of pants because of that. He still has the occasional accident.

  • We've only been doing the potty training business for 3 weeks, but even at his worst, I don't think he's gone through more than 3 sets of clothes a day. So, 10 outfits might be fine depending on how much you want to do laundry. Right now, we just keep a bag at DCPs house with two extra sets of undies and spare pants.

That being said, I've been warned not to stock up too much on shorts ahead of time. For tall thin kids (does that description fit T? It's be awhile since I've seen her!), they can often get away with last year's shorts. I know for C the waist in a lot of his pants fit fine, but the legs are too short, so I think he'll still be able to pull off 24 mo/2t shorts.

  • I'd say half of T's shorts are 2T and the other half are 3T.  I'm all for putting her in clothes that are too big to get more bang for the buck :P  Whatever I buy for this year will likely be  3T, so probably still wearable next summer.  I'd buy 4T clothes that I like if I didn't think she'd need more for this summer.

I'm not sure I have an interest in regularly doing her laundry more than once a week, so maybe I'll get a few more things for this summer.

  • DD potty trained pretty quickly. However, I still put at least 2 outfits in her daycare bag per week. This for the occasional accident or if they get dirty while playing outside. I also keep an extra outfit for each kid in the back of our mini van. So for me, 10 would not be enough because that would only leave me with 7 outfits and I only like to do laundry once a week.

I would probably say to get a few more back-up outfits. If you want to save some money, I am a huge fan of getting stuff at Unique Thrift stores. They tend to have a pretty good selection of kids clothes for reasonable prices. You could just pick up a few more shirts and shorts to have as back-up in a pinch.

  • I agree with vtkendra.  And another idea for cheap clothes at this age is ebay.  When DD#1 was 2, I went on ebay and got a couple of significant sized lots for under a $100 total.  I've noticed that after size 3T there are fewer options on ebay, but for the 2-3T size, there is a lot of stuff on there and it's great for the basic play clothes that you don't want to worry about getting dirty (whether it be from PT or just from playing in the dirt).

One comment re: number of times you'll do laundry--that will increase while you are in the initial PT period--I don't think you'll want that laundry sitting around for more than a day or so.  Like MPD, we started PT about a month ago and we are down to one or two accidents a day at most and I do laundry every couple of days to deal with those closes.

  • Oh yeah, good point about wanting to do laundry relatively quickly anyway! And C's spare clothes are generally hand me downs, Target $4 deals or thrift store scores. I'm actually too cheap to buy anything by "nice" clothes at Gymboree!

I'm the queen of letting dirty clothes soak 'til I get to that load, so we'll see how often I actually run the washer.

The benefit to Gymboree is that I can shop from my living room at 8 pm (aside from the cuteness factor that I can't ignore).  I can't imagine having time to get to a thrift store every few months to keep up with how fast T grows.

Thus, the beauty of ebay--cheap clothes, from the comfort of your own home:)
