What is your opinion on this?

I've been invited to several showers recently that have done this and honestly didn't think twice about it...Yet I've come across several posts on the Baby Showers board that suggests this is VERY much a "no-no"...

I'm referring to the little poems or inserts included in a shower invitation suggesting that you bring a book instead of a card.

Just wondering what everyone here on PAIF thinks? If you are having a shower, would you want the hostess doing this for you?

NO, I feel like gifts should be given freely, not because they were requestd. And what do you do if you get multiple books the same all with writing? Cant return them, and now your stuck...

I went to a shower where we bought a gift and a book but nobody signed the inside. They did it because she is a 5th grade teacher.

We did it for my friend but she's a librarian. She gave a list of suggested books

i know for my shower, my sister told me for a wishing well, they are doing a 'start the baby's library' and instead of a random wishing well gift, having people bring a book for baby........even if there's duplicates, as a teacher, that's one thing i've come to learn, books get used to pieces, so it's always good to have duplicates, incase a favorite get's beaten up lol

I've only heard of it in the context of replacing your gift with a book (so books are the only gifts received), often for a second baby shower. I'm ok with that, but not really the "give me a gift AND a book instead of a card" shower. That sounds kind of demanding...

same here.

i went to a shower that did this and i rather spend $4 on a book rather than a card, but i wouldn't want to tell people what they should bring.

I guess I am not a fan - I don't think it's good to dictate what someone brings. I thimk if I wanted books I would just register for some. I am also not a fan of diaper raffles though either.

I love books, and can't wait to read to my son. I don't see anything wrong with asking guests to bring a book. Everyone doesn't have to bring a book, but if they want to they can. That's how I see it.

I don't see anything wrong with it. (and by the way I think the baby shower board is a bit harsh). I thought the book idea was a neat one the first shower I saw it at. I thought about doing that but I decided on a *gasp* diaper raffle instead.

I think you just kind of have to know your guests. If you have a lot that you think would be put off by it, don't do it. And no I don't think duplicate books is a bad thing either! But if you are concerned about that, you could try putting them on your registry too.

We did this (as you know!).

I didn't get any duplicate books, which actually surprised me. Not everyone brought a book (we still got some cards). We put a ton of books on the registry, so that people would think of it as part of the gift, and not something extra that we were asking that they buy.

Our reasoning was that a card is anywhere from $3-5 and you can buy little board books for the same price. A book is something that will be treasured both by us and by LO ... whereas a card is something that will eventually get thrown away, you know?

So I really like the idea. I'm never put off by it!

Hi S! That's great you didn't get any dups! Yeah I've never been put off by it either, I had just come across some posts where people obviously thought otherwise, lol! I can't believe you only have two more days left! EEeeekkk!!!
