Pregnant after IF

Leiden 5 Factor Anyone?

If you have tested positive for this mutation did you decide to take heparin or lovenox?

I have tested positive, but b/c I have never thrown any clots (32 and I was on the pill for 14 years) my OBGYN hasn't suggested the shots for me.  He said he would follow me closely - this makes me nervous.

Just curious to know if there are any other ladies out there that have tested positive and aren't taking meds.

...I have an appt in 2.5hr with my family Dr. and I know we will be talking about this.

Re: Leiden 5 Factor Anyone?

  • Sorry, I have a prothrombin mutation that affects my platelets.  I will have to take Lovenox until 3 months after the baby is born.   So I'm not much help. But if you are nervous, you can ask your family Dr for a hematologist consult.

    Good luck, darlin!

  • I am lurking, not pg, but my RE has me on aspirin and Lovenox even while TTC.  I have already seen a perinatologist and the plan is for aspirin and Lovenox during pregnancy.

You should look up some of the studies that discuss live birth rates for women with FVL.  Very convincing.  Have you seen a specialist at all?

  • This was a concern for us, as my father, Aunt (dads sister) and Grandparents (dads parents) all have this as well as 2 and 8. They put me on Heparin right away, while I was going through treatments. Turned out I am not a carrier even, but my RE thought Heparin was better not sure why....

I also take an asprin every day....

    Good luck!

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden after delivery. I had a pulmonary embolism after delivering the boys and had blood tests done at that time. I just finished my anticoagulation therapy this last month. FVL is not the worst thing to have, as long as you tell all your doctors ahead of time, before surgeries or delivering. Also, they will probably have you on Heparin before delivery. I hope everything goes smoothly for you - PM me if you have any other ?s :)

  • I would ask to be on one or the other.  Lovenox is more expensive and only one shot a day and burns more IMO.  Heparin is too shots a day.  I don't have Factor V but other clotting issues - if Factor V had come back + I def. would have pushed for a blood thinner.

  • Thanks ladies.  My family Dr. is going to call my OBGYN next week to discuss my situation and his decision.  Now I sit tight.  I did let him know that I am very concerned about not being put on them.  He thought that maybe b/c I have had 3 bleeding episodes so far with this pregnancy that perhaps that has played into the decision - just a guess though.  He did understand my concern...

This. I'm on Heparin 2x a day and will increase to 3 later in pg. I inject with insulin needles so not too bad. I also take baby aspirin. Hope your OB addresses your concerns asap. GL!

  • I am positive for factor v leiden and my hematologist wanted me on lovenox when doing IVF and on a cycle without IVF I was to start it after I got a +.  I have been on baby asprin daily for over a year.

I don't find the shots "that bad" - I ice beforehand and after - I do bruise sometimes though.  I am also lucky that my insurance covers lovenox very well, I pay $5 for a 30 day supply (well, it's the generic).

I would definately talk to your dr about it more.
