DH job offer = probationary period? Help!

So DH got a great job offer, which includes a raise of $2.50/hour, which should be great, however if he starts a new job right now that means no calling off, no vacation, no sick days when baby comes. My understanding is that FMLA doesn't apply until you have been at a job x number of days =( I am in grad school, and can only take two weeks off, we were counting on DH taking two weeks off after that to get me through the end of the semester...I am so conflicted! This would be a good move for him, but there is not anyone else that I could/would leave my newborn with every day for those two weeks! WTD?

  • It's just 2 weeks...trust me I know how hard it is, but financially that will help out your family. You could look into preschools a Church, if you are worried about leaving an infant with a regular daycare. If he doesn't take that job would you be struggling more? You need to weigh your options and see if 2 weeks is worth it.

  • I think he should talk to the employer and tell them you're having a baby and when you have it he'll need 2 weeks off and see if they'll work with him.  If they decline, then weigh your options and make your decision but it wouldn't hurt to at least ask.  The worst they can do is say no and then you're right back at this point so nothing's lost.

  • I would negotiate the birth of this baby into his starting terms...  see what they say.  I also would talk to the college about options regarding childcare.  Maybe they have something that could work?
  • If he takes the job, you could see if there is a college student who could help out while you're in classes. It will be difficult to find a facility that will take a 2 week old baby. FMLA usually doesn't start for a year I thought.
  • As others have said have him talk with his employer you never know they might be very understanding!  Otherwise I would say take the job and hire someone, though the cost might not seem worth it right away in the long run it will be
