1st Trimester

First time moms, are you thinking of taking an classes?

Like mothering classes? I don't really know what type of classes are out there to be honest... I haven't looked into it and I was wondering if any new moms will be taking them.

Do you think you need to take any classes?  Just curious i guess.

I don't think i'll be taking any mom classes. I've been asking my mom a bunch of questions and when we finally tell our friends i'll be asking them a bunch of questions.

  • probably not any parenting/mom classes, but we'll give the whole "lamaze/what to expect in the birthing" type of class a shot.

  • Probably take the birthing class and probably a class on infant care.  Neither myself or my DH has even changed a diaper in our lives, so we will need a little baby 101.

  • I was planning on taking a birthing class of some sort.  Something more for my hubby so he is prepared.
  • I just looked at the classes they are offering at one of the hospitals here......holy cow are there a lot to choose from.  There are nursing classes, pregnancy classes (tell you how the baby is developing and how your body is changing), daddy bootcamp classes, infant classes and natural childbirth classes.  Some of my friends have advised me to do the breastfeeding class (although they warned me that I may see some women actually breastfeed to show.......and it was a bit awkward for the husbands LOL).......so I may do that and the infant one.  I read a lot online about what my body is going through and how the baby is developing.......plus the classes are a few hours long :(
  • DH and I went to a childcare class last weekend and I'm really glad we did.  If nurses had tried to rush all of that information about caring for the umbilical cord and everything else into our heads while I'm in the hospital, I know I'd be super overwhelmed.

I had never swaddled before and it's been eons since I changed a diaper or gave a baby a bath (my nephew's almost 10) and DH hasn't done any of those things ever.

Again, it was very informative and we're really glad we went.

I'm considering the breastfeeding class and we're definitely going to take a CPR class.

  • With DS I took a 4 class series offered at our hospital when I was 8-9 months pregnant.  Childbirth class (we did 4 evening classes instead of the all day Saturday class - made some great new mom friends), infant CPR, breastfeeding, and a child basic class (can't remember what it was called) that went over how to give a bath/change diapers/sleep on back/approved medicines...

  • Maybe a birthing class & to care for baby for DH since he has never dealt with a baby before. My dr gave me some info on classes that are held in the hospital he is in.

  • I highly recommend one birthing class for you and your SO so you both know what to expect -- it helped me ot see the various options for pain management, etc. that I had no idea about (and ended up using).

I also suggest if you're planning to breastfeed, take a class. It's not as natural as you may think and there were actual techniques that I learned in that class that helped a ton.

  • I'm choosing not to do any of the classes, the hospital i wanted to give birth at require you to do at least 3 classes all with a cost of $50 each. They require 1 breastfeeding class, 1 parenting class and 1 birthing class. So I decided to go to the other hospital my doctor delivers at (since they don't require any of that stuff).
  • I'm not planning to take a basic baby care class myself, because I've taken care of a lot of small kids from newborn on up.  (Big immediate family!)  My husband wants to take a new dads class though, which covers baby care, since he's never been around babies.

We're planning on both attending a childbirth class and a breastfeeding class.

  • This will be #2 for us, so we won't be doing any classes, but I would highly recommend taking some classes if your hospital offers them.  We took the birthing class, breastfeeding, and infant care.  Of course not all the information was useful, but when you're up in the middle of the night going on hour 2 to get the baby to fall asleep, something useful from a class may pop into your mind.  The nursing class was very helpful in showing several nursing positions, the birthing class was great for both dh and I (dh learned how to be helpful during labor, and what not to do).  All in all, it was time and $ well spent!

  • for my 1st I took a birthing class and a breast feeding class. I took the bf class to meet the lc who was highly recommended - she was a great help.  The birthing class teacher was an idiot, but it did help me mildly know what to expect since I didn't talk anything over with my doc because we were going to do that at my 36 week appt - opps.

  • We took the birthing class offered by the hospital- total waste of time. Also I went to a few La Leche League meetings on breastfeeding... it was informative but nothing I couldn't learn online, which I did.

     Parenting classes, no.

  • I am 10ish weeks and  have looked into this because it will be my first. I have never changed a diaper but my DH has. We are going to take a child/infant CPR class, along with a couple other classes through the hospital where I will be delivering at. I think the CPR class is key....
