How did you meet?

To go along with all the wedding/engagement posts, let's hear how you and your SO met.

My husband and I met when we were 16 in Australia randomly walking down the street. He was from Ilinois, I was from Florida, and we randomly started talking one night on a street corner. We only spent a couple of hours together and then one of the other girls I was with gave my husband our number at the hotel because she thought he was cute. He called the next day and asked to talk to me. She was kinda pissed so I suggested we all get together the next night. Well, without meaning to we ended up standing up my husband and his friends because our dinner plans ran later than expected. I assumed I would never hear from him again, but he kept calling my hotel room over and over again until I finally came back and answered. We talked that night for almost 3 hours on the phone from two hotels away until we decided to sneak out of our rooms and meet in the parking lot of my hotel. He was there playing baseball as part of the Junior Olympics and he was leaving later that day. We spent a few hours together talking and then before he left, he kissed me. We each went our separate ways, but kept in touch over the next 6 years. We became best friends and would give each other relationship advice but were always secretly in love with each other. We never went more than a month without speaking.

The year after college, I was getting ready to move to Boston and he was getting ready to leave for boot camp for the Marine Corps. We ended up being in St. Louis at the same time and met up with each other. He told me he loved me, always had loved me, and only wanted to be with me. I told him it made no sense- we were headed in different directions and we had never even lived in the same place. He told me to take a chance on love, and I did. For three months while he was in bootcamp we wrote to each other every day and had no communication other than our letters. When he graduated, I flew out to California for his graduation and I knew as soon as I saw him I could never be with anyone else. He then went to different trainings around the country for 4 months and I would fly every other month to see him wherever he was. Finally when he got stationed in San Diego, I realized I didn't want to live without him anymore, so I packed up everything I had, quit my job, and left behind everything I knew to be with him. We got married 6 months later and have been happily married ever since.

Sometimes I stil wake up in the morning and roll over and see him next to me and can't believe I married the 16 year old boy I met in Australia, but I can't picture my life any other way.

  • Match.com

I joined on a Sunday, found him on Monday (I contacted him as I was out of his age range). We went out on Wednesday. I cancelled my account 2 weeks later after our 2nd date.

  • We both volunteered at our local fire department. We were both fire fighters, went to classes together and fought fires together, went on car accidents, boat rescues, floods... everything. We had know each other since I as 14, but he was 7 years older so obviously that didn't work! Wink

When I was 17 we started dating. He was 25. I had been friends with him for a long time before we started dating so this was a very easy relationship for me! We were really just meant to be together...

  • What a great story!

My H and I met at a language exchange in a bar and I was on another guy's lap at the time.  He and his friends were all hitting on my blonde friend and I really thought they were all a bit pathetic.

Well, he added me on messenger and we started talking a lot.  The thing with the other guy fell through a few weeks later and I decided to give H a chance when I was in Madrid alone for a few days during the Christmas break before my sister arrived (she came to visit me my first year here).  Our first date was an all-day thing that left me curious and very, very interested in him.  Things just unfolded naturally after that and we became inseparable.

  • Alexandrahope, that is like something from a movie. Great story.

My DH went to high school and college with my cousin. We grew up 20 minutes away from one another and even found out we were at some of the same parties in high school.

My senior year of college, I visited my cousin, who had moved to Chicago for school, and DH went to the bars with us. After graduating, I planned a move to Chicago, which DH heard about through cousin. He asked for my info and started talking to me online, emailing me and hanging out with cousin and me when I was in town for interviews.

On one interview trip, he finally asked me out. We saw Wet Hot American Summer. Two months later, my move was complete and we were officially together. It will be 10 years on February 19.

  • DH used to date my BFF in Jr. High. We all went to the fair together when we were 12 and we met there. Then we met again after they had broken up on a trip to Catalina Island when we were all 16 or so. Finally we met for the third time at a party she threw when we were 19 and DH and I have been together ever since.

  • My roommate in university was desperately trying to meet "the one". She signed up for every dating website, went to speed dating and singles nights. The girl was 21 but you would think she was already afraid of becoming a lonely old cat lady. One night while I was at work, she was drinking in our room and chatting online with a guy she had me on one of the sites. I came home from work to a very drunk roommate who told me she had decided to go meet this guy. He was having a party at his house on an army base a half hour away, and she was dunk enough to think it was a good idea to go meet him. She couldn't be talked out of it so I went to make sure she didn't do anything stupid. She spent the night sick in the bathroom, but husband happened to be the roommate of the guy my friend had wanted to meet. We sat up all night talking. I went back the next weekend for another party, two weeks later we had our first real date on Valentines Day. I'm pretty sure I knew by that first real date that I was going to marry this guy.

  • We used to work in the same building but for different companies and we would both (we admitted later) try to cross paths or find excuses to see each other.  After a few weeks we went out and we've been inseperable since that was in 07' :)  The funny thing is that neither of us stayed at that building for more than a month later so it was really great timing or else we never would've met.

  • Online.  Before it was cool or even not creepy.  LOL  I responded to his profile and he emailed me.  We communicated long distance for about 6 weeks before he drove from Indy to Chicago to see me.  After that first weekend visit, I told my mom that I was going to marry him and 8 months later I did. :)

Facebook poker.  Yep.  Pretty lame, huh?  It was nearly four years ago and neither of us have really played since.

  • CVS. I was a pharmacy tech and he was the assistant manager. He was my superior, so our manager made us tell the DM just to cover her azz, haha. DM was fine with it because he met his wife at CVS when he was her superior too!

Funny though I was not attracted to him at all at first. Someone had told me we were getting a really hot AM, and he didn't live up to my expectations. A fellow employee/friend told me he liked me and wanted to ask me on a date (so highschool I know) and I said yes.

DH is 7 years older than me and my brother had such an issue with this at first, so when Dh was ready to ask me to marry him he made sure to ask my bro for permission first. They are good friends now though.

  • We first met our freshman year in college when he was visiting from a branch campus.  He of course has no recollection of this at all. lol.  The next time I see him and the first time he remembers meeting me was the summer of our junior year.  We exchanged numbers and IM names.  Our first date was supposed to be a movie but he never called me back to schedule, once again he doesn't remember doing this.  We then didn't talk for about a year and a half.  We started to communicate right before he moved to SC to for an internship.  From then on we were in a long distance relationship from 2005 until 2006 he lived in PA and I lived in CT after graduation.  I then accepted to grad school in NJ and we were now an hour away from eachother, the closet commute ever, lol.  Really appreciated eachother after being so far away for most of our relationship.

  • We met at a place called the True Love coffeehouse.  Ick!

He was from Michigan, in town staying with a friend who had moved here (no. ca.) for work.  He had been here about six weeks when we met.  He got my number from a friend and asked me to go with him to the birthday party of a mutual acquaintance.  After the party we walked around town and ended up at a friend's house where we stayed up all night talking and watching infomercials.

I was pretty much in love by the next day.  We barely left each others' side until he went home.  Our first date was Feb 23 (2003), and he had a ticket to go back to Michigan on March 11.  In May he came to visit for a week, then moved in with my mom and me in June.  That August we moved into our own place.

We got our BFP on Feb 23, eight years later!

  • My sister and DH worked for the same construction company. He would have an annual party in the fall at his house and everyone at their work had an open invitation to his parties so my sister brought me because she thought we would hit it off.

We didnt go on our first date until a month later and after that we were inseperable and six months later we were engaged.

  • I divorced my ex in 2005, in 2007 I decided I was ready to be open to the possibility of dating. I finally felt like I had hurt men as much as I had been hurt (that was my mission for those missing 2 years). I had 4 friends, including one of my professors, try to "hook me up" with 4 different guys. The first guy worked at the same nursing home I did clinicals in, he was very handsome we flirted and he got my number. But after he realized I had a 4 year old daughter he was outtie. I met the second guy at a friend's party, she was also friends with him, we both got pretty drunk but he was pushier than I was comfortable with. Trying to force kissing and really handsy, he called a couple of times after that but I was always "to busy" to see him again. Then  a friend asked if I wanted to meet this other guy and she showed me a picture. I was not impressed with what I saw and just laughed it off. Then a few days later she said "I need to know if you want to meet him or not" I said "Honestly, I'm not attracted to him at all but I don't want to miss something so great because I am being vain" so we decided to meet with a bunch of people around in case it didn't go well. So we went to another friends house. The guys had gone hunting and had made elk fajitas out of their kill. I took DD since this was a "kid friendly" event. When I saw this guy I knew he was a good guy, he carried DD around the house and let her turn the lights on and off all night. The friend that introduced us was talking about how the guy had just climbed on her roof and fixed her satalite because her husband wouldn't do it. I just fell in love with him that night, I think he fell in love with DD that night and fell in love with me later. But I never met the forth guy and I've never looked back.

  • I was actually supposed to be set up with one of his best friends.  When I went to meet him, he didn't really seem that interested but his friend, MH, was flirting with me all night.  By the time I left, he was pretty much asking me out again.  We've been together now for almost 8 years.

  • We met in the Dominican Republic when we were both 19.  I was there for three months building churches, and he was on a construction team that came down for 10 days.  We just clicked, and hung out the whole time, but nothing romantic.  He gave me his email address before we left, and my response was 'Wait, HOW do you say your last name?!' seriously...its weird. I started dating someone else shortly after I got home, and when that guy and I split up, he was dating someone else.  This went back and forth for a while, and after a year or two we only really 'talked' on AIM.  (oh...the days of IMing).

3 years after we met we got back in touch, and started dating. He proposed four months after that.

  • DH and I were in a play together my freshman year of college (his Jr. year).  I played his stepson.

I must have real daddy issues because I was pursing both him and the guy who played my father in that show.  The other guy was hosting the cast party, so I figured it was a good time to make my move on one of them.  When the host disappeared into his bedroom, I figured that was a sign to make my move on DH.

And I did.  And he told me he wasn't interested in me, he got another girl's number that night, and he liked blondes.  I was on top of him at the time and told him "if you weren't interested, we wouldn't be doing this."

He called me the next day because according to him I "had probably got what I wanted from him and wouldn't be calling him."  He asked me out and we went to a club where he told me he just wanted to be friends with me.  At least that's what I heard.  He claims he said he wanted to slow down and develop our relationship.

We spent the next 3 weeks practically inseparable.  Except one day when I didn't see him and called him crying that I missed him.  He told me it was puppy love and I'd get over it, but he wouldn't try and "take advantage of me" by kissing me that night.

We left for spring break and when we got back to school he came to find me and said he couldn't stop thinking of me the entire time he was away and he wanted to be together.  And we've been together ever since.  It'll be 12 years next month.

  • The day we actually "met" was at a crazy work party the day after DH's 26th bday (and also a couple days after DH had his wisdom teeth taken out).

I was completely hammered. Let me give you a quick run down of our convo:

(I walked up to him and said), "Yoo're hot, you look familiar"

DH replied "That's because I work with you, I've been trying to talk to you for a couple months now."

Me: "Oh, haha.. sorry.. well you're hot"

... after about 6 long island iced teas I ended up trying to kiss his cheek.. I missed and stuck my tongue in his ear instead. Embarrassed

Apparently that's all it took for DH.. he invited me to his Christmas party but I declined. He then called and asked me out on a date on NYE day.. we went skating at Frog Pond in Boston.. the rest is history. Smile

  • We were both just out of high school and I was friends with a group of people that used to throw wearhouse raves (don't judge we have all been there right?). Anyways all us friends would help out during these "raves". I would be at the door collecting money and checking ID's with a couple other people. What can I say I have always had a thing for money. Not that this was a legal establishment. Oh no this was a wearhouse that we (just out of high school, some of us were not even 21 yet) put lights up in, made a stage, and got a keg of beer and charged people 5$ to get through the door. Needless to say it only lasted for a year before the city officals came down on us too hard and we closed the doors for good.

Anyways DH shows up kinda early with a friend who is in a tie, such a red flag there it got them noticed big time by us. Well DH was supper cute with his 12 inch blue spike hair (think 1999 style) and facial percings. So one of the other grils at the door with me was like "Hay you you get to come back here and help us with something." LOL He was basically just kidnapped by us and held hostage in the front door room the whole party. Poor guy just wanted to have fun not be put to work by random strange and mean girls. LOL Little did he know one of them would turn out to be his wife 10 years later.

We talked and hung out then, but didn't start dating until 6 years ago when we ran back into eachother at the local college. I was in the midst of my college years and he was just taking a couple classes. We started hanging out on a regular basis and well things just devloped. And here we are 6 years later happily married (most of the time) and enjoying life together. I couldn't imagine my life without him in it and I feel very blessed that he is my husband.

  • We met in college. I was a sophomore and he was a junior transferring in to play football. The college was pretty small and I had a few football player obsessed friends so I heard about him before I met him. He gives me a hard time because the first time we sort of met I was rude. One of my "friends" had told me to stay away because he was hers, so when she and a few other of my good friends were hitting on him in the caf I walked up without acknowledging him and told my friends I was leaving. This was during the spring semester and that fall we had a class together. He approached my friend (the one who wanted him) about whether I was interested and available. She ended up talking to me about it and I told her if he asked me out I would go. A week later he asked me to dinner. We hit it off and have been together 7 and a half years now.

  • I started dating a friend of one of my cousins when I was 16. My family never liked him and neither did any of my friends. We were really a very bad fit.

I worked in a research lab my senior year of college, and the lab manager (who knew about my boyfriend) asked me if I'd like to be set up with her friend's son. He was a biology major at MIT and would be coming back to town after graduating. I was terribly offended, because my boyfriend and I were in the process of planning our engagement/wedding.

A few months later, I finally meet this guy. Turns out we'd been accepted to the same graduate program. I didn't really like him at first (he came across as arrogant, which really rubs me the wrong way), but he caught my attention. Fast forward a few months...he leaves his girlfriend and I leave my fiance. We've been together ever since - almost 6.5 years now.

We didn't figure out until months into our relationship that he was the guy the lab manager had tried to fix me up with  :)

  • DH and I were set up.  My sister and I run an Irish dance school. DH's boss's wife and daughters took classes from us.  The wife kept telling me they knew someone I should meet. I was really hesitant. I didn't want to go on a blind date. So they brought him to the North Texas Irish Festival "to take pictures of our performance."

We were introduced (he was also introduced to my ENTIRE family) and DH invited himself to walk around the festival with me and my friend.  After the festival, we all went to dinner as a big group so we could talk more. He got my number. He called on his way home and asked if I wanted to get together again that night so we could continue our conversation. So we met up for beers at a local bar. The bar closed. We weren't done talking. I went to his apartment, we cracked open a bottle of wine, and continued talking. He walked me to my car to say goodnight and kissed me on the cheek.  Not gonna lie-- I was thinking "WTF? A kiss on the cheek? Really? That's it."    I had never met anyone as intriguing.  That was in '05. We got married in '07.

  • Our story is the worst, most unromantic story ever. One we will never tell our kids. I was in college (I was 23) and went to a party at my sister's house. I was single for the first time since I was 16, so needless to say I was on the prowl. My dh was my sis's boyfrined's cousin and he came to the party. We started a conversation because I hated one of ex girlfriends. We both ended up pretty much hammered drunk. He was super tall and cute and the complete opposite as my ex. Cut to the chase, we slept togather the first night we met. My sis freaked out on me because, "He's in high school!!" WHAT?! No, he was not in high school, but he was 18 and had just graduated high school. He tried a few times after that to ask me out, but I turned him down and told him we was just too young for me. I got back togather with my ex. Fast forward 2 years and my ex and I break up again and I'm at my sis's again (not hammered this time) and my dh is there. We had the same instant connection, even without alcohol. We were dating and inseparable a week after that and moved in togather 2 months after that. Sometimes bad decisions end well!
