Recommend your Eczema Lotion

DD has always had eczema, but its never been this bad. It used to be contained to the joints of her elbows and her cheeks, but the past week its spread to her whole body and looks pretty bad. The pedi gave us some cortizone but said to use it very sparingly, and only on the areas that get 'crusty'.

I've tried Aveeno Eczema, regular Aveeno, and currently Stelatopia. I've also tried samples of Eucerin Calming Creme and Aquafor, but both are super thick and sticky - makes DD look and feel like a greased up little piggy.

Have you tried anything that you like that works well? FWIW, we use California Baby lavender body wash for baths.

Re: Recommend your Eczema Lotion

  • I use the baby magic shea butter balm, but not sure if its any better than the other stuff b/c I havent tried anything else except the aquaphor. Its not as greasy and it goes on easily.

  • I got a patch of eczema on my face after my c-section that would not go away! I had it for 6 straight months before I finally tried the new neosporin eczema cream. I'm not sure if there is an age rec. for it- but it's definitely worth checking with the Pedi because this stuff completely cleared my eczema in 3 days!

Curel also makes a lotion for eczema that claims to be gentle enough for babies. I used it for months, it helped with the itching but never fixed the problem.

  • I just got done working in an allergist's office for 4 weeks. They see tons of kids with eczema, and here's their recommendation: Soak in the tub, a couple times a day if possible, for at least 10 minutes until the fingers & toes are wrinkly (which means the epidermis has gotten saturated). Keep all affected areas under water if possible (I know with the cheeks it's not - but hold a wet washcloth over them as much as you can). Get out of the tub, pat dry, and immediately put on a cream that's thick, white, and unscented. It should be one that's so thick it has to come in a jar, not a tube or pump. They recommend Eucerin, CeraVe, Vanicream, Aquaphor, and one other one that I can't remember at the moment.

  • We use CeraVe (found it at Target) and it's not sticky or greasy at all, and no fragrance. It was recommended by the pharmacist. I agree with PP, anything that is so thick that it's in a jar (and not a tube) should help.

  • Adele's isn't bad, but we use the Eucerin Original Creme (comes in a tub). It's thick, but I don't think it's as sticky as the calming creme, which I use on myself all the time (I have extra dry skin). I also put it on right before bed when she gets into her jammies, so it doesn't matter as much that she's a little greasy.

For baths, we use Burt's Bees Unscented, which the pedi said was fine, but he also said that we could try Dove bar soap (the plain kind) or Cetaphil if we think her skin is getting worse. We also don't use soap on her every bath, either, and that seems to help.

I hope you find something that works best for you soon!

  • DH has eczema really bad on his scalp and eyelids. Well we actually found something that is WORKING. It's the Neosporin Essentials Eczema Care.

I'm talking DH's eczema was so bad we tried multiple EXPENSIVE shampoos, steriod shots, and creams. This is the only thing that is actually working.

You may have to ask the ped to take a look at it before putting it on your DD. I can't imagine it has anything horrible in it though since it's made my neosporin.

Hope you find something that works!!

  • DD has eczema, too. A couple of my friends swore by the California Baby Calendula Cream (in the jar). It's expensive, but we bought it, and it didn't work. At all. We bought the cheaper Aveeno Eczema lotion, and it worked like a charm.

  • Cetaphil cream (in a jar) worked for us. We also switched to aveno for baths.
