Umbilical cord stump is red/pink...possible granuloma?

My LO's umbilical cord fell off a few days ago. When it did, there was still a piece of white stump that was left. Part of it dried up, turned black and fell off today. Now there is a bump thing that is reddish/pink in color and looks "wet". (No other way to describe.) He is not in any pain. This is my first baby so I don't know what the stages are when the umbilical cord falls off. Is this normal?

  • DS had this.  We just used a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol to keep it dry/clean.  It went away in a couple days.

  • My LO's did that, too.  Just keep an eye on it and like others said wipe it with alcohol.  My LO's started to get gunky after a couple of days instead of looking better (gross, I know!)...we were going in for a weight check anyway so while we were there our pedi applied silver nitrate to it to make it dry up completely.
