? re: paci and sleep training, please help! Thanks!

XP - Hey sleep training moms! I will probably be joining you this weekend, but I had a question about the paci. Did you get rid of it all together during sleep training or just during actual sleep? DD loves her paci and doesn't like her carseat, so it comes in handy when we are shopping, etc. Also, that is what I use during our naptime routine to rock her a bit and get her drowsy. Also, what do you plan on doing at later times, perhaps when LO is sick or something and it is the middle of the night and they can't calm down. You don't really want them to self soothe then. Or, for example, we are going on vacation in a month and I remember with DS the paci was a godsend on the airplane. I know, it sounds like I am coming up with excuses, but now that I am really faced with sleep training all these other questions are popping up. DD is 4 1/2 months btw. Thanks!

  • We got rid of the paci at night and during the day when awake.  I asked daycare to please only use if he truly needed it (as in, crying and won't settle at all), and they've used it once or twice this week just to help him go to sleep.  I'd like to not use it for naps, but we'll see how that goes this weekend lol.

He does still get it in the car, but only if he's super fussy.

If he gets sick, I doubt the paci will help any because he'll be so stuffy, and that's when it really made him mad.  All bets are off when he's sick, he'll need the comfort then.  If it's just a little cold and he's not crazy uncomfortable, I would probably let him try to soothe himself, but if he can't, I wouldn't deny him the contact he needs.

You mentioned the carseat and shopping - we've now stopped using the infant carrier when we go out because he was fussing in it.  He wants to be able to look around, so we just carry him in ourselves (protects from wind and such), and then use the stroller.  He fits fine and is much happier that he can stretch and kick around.

  • We got rid of the paci, full stop, when we started sleep training. I think I was more attached to it then I thought, I got so sad gathering them up and putting them away! That being said, she cried when she went down to sleep for awhile the first few nights without it and now she seems fine. We used to use it in the infant carrier while shopping, in the car, etc. She now just amuses herself in the car and while shopping and when she does cry out when I'm driving (and I would normally be twisting myself into all these positions to give her the paci,) now I just let her cry for a bit and she usually settles pretty quickly.

We thought it would be better to just take it away completely than confuse her by giving it to her sometimes and not giving it to her other times.
