So apparently i lose m/s but gain heartburn LOL but i'll take heartburn any day over all the vomiting!!!

DH says good, we'll have a hairy baby LOL

  • Zantac every day is the only thing that works for me.  You can also take liquid Maalox.

  • I had major trouble with hb. I took Tums, then Zantac. Nothing helped. I told my ob/gyn. She gave me prescription strength Pepcid. I take one in the morning with food, and one at night before dinner-or with dinner. The key is to not wait til you have hb with pepcid. Take it before. Once you get it, it is too late.

  • thanks ladies! yea, i wasn't 100% sure what was/wasn't safe to take, i was going to call my obgyn later to ask her. I may try maylox for now and if that doesn't work, move on to zantac, etc.

  • I take Zantac when I wake up and again in the evening and it is more or less keeping things under control. After 1st trimester, omeprazole (Prilosec and also its cousins) are even considered quite safe, but because it hasn't been around as long as Zantac and there isn't as much safety data, I think Zantac is better to try first. Tums did absolutely nothing for me. Feel better...I know what you mean about going straight from m/s to the heartburn!

  • I've been taking Zantac as well. Maalox and tums stopped working around 28 weeks. Zantac works for me about 80% of the time, and it's preventative as well.
  • mylanta or maalox. that is on my ok list.

I eat at least 3 tums a day -- i have it wicked bad.  I bought the berry flavors and they arent so bad.

They say try chewing gum, avoid pop and spicy foods.

  • Oh, I am so right there with you!  I'm doing pepcid once a day, and maalox at night, but I still have mild heartburn all day.  I've had to give up all my spicy foods that I love, so sad.  Obviously worth it, but the heartburn is no fun!

  • I would definitely try zantac or pepcid OTC and see if that helps.  If those don't quite cut it, I know that Prevacid, which is also OTC, is category B.

If you take Prevacid (or any proton-pump inhibitor or PPI), it is important to take it 30 minutes before eating something, since it only works on actively secreting acid pumps, and those don't get activated until you start eating. Since it takes about 30 minutes for the drug to be in your system, it is best to take the pill 30 minutes before eating.

The chocolate also probably didn't help! DH can't eat chocolate right before bed because it really flares up his heartburn!
