Acupuncture for Morning Sickness??

I read somewhere that they do acupuncture for pregnancy so I called a nice place in my area and made an appt for today at 2. It's only 40 dollars a session and I think Kaiser insurance gives a 20 percent discount, which seems like a sweet deal. So has anyone else tried acupuncture, while pregnant or not?

I tried sea bands which did not work at all, ginger tea made me throw up more, and my doctor prescribed Zofran but it makes me feel worse to be honest and I hate being so drowsy.

Anyway, I will let you all know how it went when I get back for all the ladies who are also hanging on the last string with this dang m/s.

Re: Acupuncture for Morning Sickness??

  • I used to work for an acupuncturist/naturopath. I've had acupuncture while not pg for some old neck injuries from a car accident, and it really helped. The Dr. I used to work for had a LOT of patients and people that completely swore by her. Acupuncture can actually treat a lot of things; fibromyalgia, help to stop smoking, fertility, GI issues, the list goes on. Plus it is really relaxing, hopefully it helps you!

  • I've been doing acupuncture since September to help with TTC.  It's been great.  It really helped regulate my cycles.  I am going to acupuncture weekly through the first trimester and monthly thereafter.  Because I've been going all along, I don't really have a benchmark to compare myself to...it's not like I can say wow, acupuncture really helped my morning sickness.  The appointment that I had prior to my first time getting nausea she wasn't putting needles in the spots to help nausea.  That first week was the WORST.  After that, she put needles into the spots for nausea and I felt considerably better - still felt like crap but was better.   I do wonder what I'd feel like if I hadn't had acupuncture.  I had nausea from 5.5 weeks through the beginning of this week, week 10.  Never threw up.

FYI - the first time doing acupuncture, for me, wasn't the most relaxing.  It didn't hurt but I just had anxiety about it, about being on a table in a dimly light room with needles in me.  I sort of had to talk myself down out of panic mode.  I bring this up because if you feel that way, just know it's common and that you can teach yourself to relax.  The next few appointments are better because you know what to expect.

Yes, this is totally true and great advice. I felt the same way my first time, but then after that I found myself drifting off to sleep and not wanting to get up when it was over. Definitely TRY to relax, breath, and stay somewhat still. I sort of wanted to open my eyes and look at the needles, but that doesn't help. haha!

  • I had acupuncture during my first pregnancy. I had a major flareup of vulvodynia and it is usually treated with a medication that I couldn't take while pregnant. The acupuncture was wonderful.

When I found out my son was breech we started doing moxibustion with the acupuncturist. Of all the things I tried to get him to flip (and I tried them ALL), moxibustion was the only thing that really seemed to get him moving. I think we found out too late and he didn't have enough room to flip, but I think if he could have, he would have during the moxi.
