BRAT diet?

LO has had diarrhea since Tuesday, and Wed I tried to have him eat BRAT foods, and then yesterday I started him on Pedialyte (which he drank like he'd never had water before!).  Well, the bowel movement was better this morning, but still runny, so i called the pedi.  Doc told me they don't use the BRAT diet anymore (any haven't for a couple decades?) and that pedialyte is only for when they are vomiting and can't keep anything down.

I was totally floored by this.  I know I was told to use the BRAT diet for myself a few years ago.  Anyone still using it when LO has diarrhea?  Has it worked for you?

Re: BRAT diet?

  • Knock on wood, but sprout hasn't had the big D yet.

HOWEVER, when he had the Great Stomach Bug of 2012 & was vomiting, we were definitely told by the nurse on call to do the BRAT diet after he was able to hold fluids down for 24-36 hrs.

Isn't dehydration more likely with diarrhea?  I mean, nothing is staying with you then either...The Pedilyte bottle talks about using it for that too, IIRC.

  • Everything I've been reading recently said to try to get them back on a normal diet as soon as possible. That doesn't mean they'll be eating the same amounts--just what they can handle--but I think BRAT is a little outdated and all that bland, carb-y food can cause its own problems.

  • Right before DS turned 2 he had severe diarrhea and vomiting.  I had him on the BRAT diet and he was screaming for sausage.  I took him to the Pedi who told me to feed him whatever he wanted and asked for.  We got sausage on the way home from the doctor.

  • We def used the BRAT diet when DS had the stomach bug.  We used it for upwards of 7 days because the diahrea was so bad and it helped DS actually get something to eat.  Only thing I would also change, is maybe add cheese?  I don't know how that would affect it but considering we cut out all liquid milk products it may be a way to get calcium in them.

  • Thanks for all the input.  Maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised!

DS doesn't seem bothered by this at all.  And we've managed to keep away the diaper rash somehow - I guess b/c it's just a few times/day rather than all day long.  Just strange.

    Anyway, thanks!
