Baby Names

Grandparent names

I know this thread is not about baby names, but I thought it would be fun. I work in health-care, and hear all sorts of different names for grandparents, Gigi, Nona, Poppy, etc.

So, what are the new grandparents being called?

Re: Grandparent names

  • I call my maternal grandmother Gigi! Love that woman.

    My kids have...

    Maternal Grandparents: Nauni and Pop-pop

    DS's Panternal Grandparents: Mom-mom and Pop-pop

DD's Paternal Grandparents: Grandmom and Grandpop

Edited due to my dumbass typing Fraternal instead of Paternal. I have a Fraternal twin and let's just pretend that was the reason for the mix up.

  • Yia Yia and Papouli- Greek for Grandpa and Grandpa.  Not sure how new it is though.

My mom wants DD to call her "Granny"....the woman isn't even 50 yet and wants to be called "Granny".  WTF?  I'm having a hard getting on board with that one.

  • We use the non-original Grandpa & Grandma for grandparents. The great-grandparents are Granny & Gramps.
  • Both grandmothers will be Nannie - total coincidence, DH and I called our maternal grandmothers Nannie and that's what our moms prefer. (Our paternal grandmothers were both Nana or Nan)

My dad will probably be Papa, bc that's what I called my grandfathers.  No word from FIL what he wants to be called but DH called his grandfather (he only had one) Pop-pop.

  • G-mom and G-pop are already established by my nephews. (My husband's dad and stepmom.)

DD will be the first grandchild on my side though, so we are going to try out Nan (my mom), Be-bop (my dad's weird suggestion for himself) and MiMi (my stepmom).

  • My dad is Pappy, and my mom is Mammy to our dog and cats lol. I saw somewhere that the kids called their grandfather Coach, which I thought was neat. My dad called his grandfather Arnold, but I think they also called him Mayor, or Sheriff- because "he was the one in charge".

  • My mom is Bubbe (Yiddish for grandma pronounced Buh-bee)
My dad, step-father, FIL, and step-son's grandfather are all Papa (however, my dad gets called Papa Matt)
DH's step-mom is MiMi (even her kids call her this...I don't get it and I try to get DD to call her by her real name since she's NOT her grandmother and has never been very nice to my husband or me).
  • My mom and dad are Grammie and Grandpa

Dh's father and stepmother are Grandpa and Nana

Dh's mother and stepfather are Gramma and Grandpa Ken.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • DH's parents are already Grammy and Pa (4 grandkids on that side already).

My parents will be Grandma and Grandpa.  Call it boring but I'm not a fan of crazy "grandparent names" unless there's a legit reason.

  • My grandparents were both Granny and Pop.  My great grandparents were Nanny and Pop.

Now with my child ... his great-grandma is Nana.  My parents are now called Mimi and Pop.  ILs are just boring Grandma and Grandpa.

I let them all choose the name they wanted DS to call them.  We skype a lot and now DS will look at my computer and shout "MIMI!"  It's too cute.

  • A few funnies ...

I know someone where they call grandpa - Grumps (because he's a very grumpy man)

And I might have said this before here but my BFF, her nephew is now 10, but has called his grandma Majesty (as in her majesty) since she insisted on that when he was born.

  • Both of our parents were already established as grandparents, so we just use the names the other grandkids' use for them. My parents are Grandmom and Pop-Pop. IL's are Nana and Poppy. My girls also have a great grandmom left on DH's side, and she is Grandma C.C.

    Those are funny!

My friend's nieces call her mom "Gaga" and they started calling her that way before Lady Gaga came around.  The girls really like Lady Gaga and their grandmother said "Lady Gaga- that's just like Me!"  but the older girl said "NO, she's LADY Gaga, you're just Gaga!"  lol

I really love Memere as a grandmother name but since we're not even the least little bit French or French Canadian it makes no sense.

A friend of mine calls her grandma Lola, which I think is beyond cute!

  • I just call all my grandparents "Grandma and Grandpa." My mom and dad are already calling themselves Gramma and Grampa... though I don't think that spelling changes how it's pronounced really. I think MIL will be Lola, as she's from the Phillippines. H's stepfather... not sure. Probably just Grandpa.

Not sure what FIL will be called, but MIL insists my niece call her "mommy".  If she thinks MY kid is calling her mommy, she's going to end up getting called "Evil Cow".

  • My parents are Nana & Papa. MIL is trying to get DD to call her LaLa, but it creeps me out.. She says my DD made it up, but I'm always with them when they are together.. so I don't buy it. I think she just wanted something like my mom because she is super competitive

  • To PP, "mommy"? Really....? What a psycho!

LO will call my parents- Mawmaw and Pawpaw

ILs are INSISTING to be called Gammie and Pops. FIL will also call himself "Gan-daddy" or "G-pops." Umm.... no. FAIL FAIL FAIL. We have told them MANY times, "LO will pick a name for you." But they insist on signing all cards as such. Gross. She will NOT call them any of these. What's wrong with Grandma or Grandpa? Or Gigi? Mimi? Anything other than these epic failures.

  • My parents will be Ya-Ya and Papu.  DH's parents are Grandma and Grandpa.  I do have a friend who just had her first.  Her dad said that he only wanted to be called "Grandfather."  Apparently her and her siblings just rolled their eyes.  They are now teaching their kids to call him Grumpy....
  • My daughter is far from the first grandchild, so names have been long established.

    On DH's side:

    Dede and Grandpa

    On my side:

    Nanny and Grampy

  • We have 2 grandma's, 2 grandpa's and 1 Papa

(One grandpa is a step, but after 30 years of marriage we don't call him a "step" at all. We're lucky to have him.)

DH's parents: Oma and Opa (German)

On an incredibly dorky note....DH and I have already decided that we would like to be called Oma and Opa some day. I think that's just too adorable.

WHAT!!! That is sooooo weird. Yeah, don't let your kid call her that!

  • No grandkids yet on either side of our family, so this will remain to be seen. I'd prefer that each grandparent set ( there are 3 of them) have unique names, but I'm going to try not to be psycho about it and just see what happens.

A few months ago my mom brought up the idea of being Bucia (boo-sha), which is Polish, and apparently what she called one of her grandmothers. I thought it was adorable and started calling her that with our dogs. But now she's decided that it sounds dirty and that she hates it Sad

I also have a set of extended cousins whose grandparents are *** and Cathy. When the oldest one started speaking, he called them Gick and Gacky, and it stuck. I think that is beyond adorable!

  • My parents wanted to be Nanna and Grandpa.

Inlaws are more original - MIL's maiden name is Gula, and she wanted to be called that, but DS couldn't say it when he was littler, so it became GuGu.

    FIL is Pop Pop.

Mine was barely 40 when she decided to be called granny.  She is in her 70's now and going strong.   Granny always just fit for all the grandkids.
