I brought my son to the pedi today to discuss his increasingly poor disposition (cries constantly) and poor sleep habits. He is 3 months old today (was born 6 weeks early). I suggested that although he never spits up, it seemed to me as if he is suffering from acid reflux. The pedi agreed and prescribed Zantac, along with keeping him elevated 30 minutes after each feeding. For those who have experience with this:
- Did you notice a distinct change once you started giving your DC the meds?
- About how long did it take to see improvement?
- Do you consider the car seat or elevate bouncer "elevated" for the 30 minutes after, or does it mean I need to hold him completely elevated after feeding? I ask because he still sleeps in these (hates to be flat--another reason I suspected the reflux).
I'm praying this is the cause of his crankiness because it is starting to wear both me and my DH down. I just feel guilty we didn't visit the pedi earlier with our concerns, especially if this cures it. We just assumed we had a baby that was extra fussy/collicky. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re: Acid Reflux-Newly Diagnosed and have questions
Sorry for your sad little guy, hopefully you'll see a turn-around right away. DD is on prevacid and I noticed a difference (happier, less spitting up, no back arching, less crying/discomfort) the next day. We had kept track of reflux symptoms as evidence for a diagnosis for 5 days before meds and 2 days after... the symptoms almost completely diappeared. One thing I would keep in mind is that the meds may not work; our doc prescribes Prevacid (if insurance covers it) as a first line because so many parents brought DC back saying Zantac wasn't working for them.
I definitely consider the bouncer, swing, car seat "elevated." You can also elevate one end of the crib to help.
It definitely sounds like your DS has silent reflux. My DS had all of the same symptoms. He was prescribed Axid, which is pretty similar to Zantac. The Pedi told us it would take a week to really see results, but we saw a difference by about day 2. He still experiences some symptoms from time to time, but much more minor than before.
I try to hold him completely upright after a feeding just because I've hear putting them in a semi-sitting position can put pressure on their stomaches. What really saved me was the Moby. I put him in the hug hold to keep him upright and then walk around with him.
He's still sleeping in his swing for naps and the first half of the night.
DD just started Zantac yesterday (has had a total of 2 doses) and I am already seeing an improvement. She has only spit up once and it really was just a little dribble. ?She seems a little calmer during feedings also and sleeps better. ?Not 100% better, but definitely an improvement. ?We also started a new formula yesterday (she gets BM with formula supplements) so that could be helping her as well. ?
My pedi only gave us a one month RX for Zantac with no refills because it sometimes loses its effectiveness. ??
We put DD in a bouncer if she starts to fall asleep after eating. ?I'm getting a Moby tomorrow. ??
Ruby has been on Prilosec since she was in the NICU. We elevate the head of her bed for when she's laying down. But the bouncer works too. I found the carseat does NOT because her tummy is squished. She mostly has silent reflux but she'll spit up a lot in her carseat. The swing works too. You can also consider the type of bottle you're using, we use Dr Browns with the slow flow nipple.
Ruby slept in her bouncer for about a week because she was so uncomfortable in her bassinet. Sleeping on the left side is comfortable for reflux too, as this positions the esophogas above the stomach.
Give your meds a week, and if you don't see any change call your pedi. This med doesn't work great for many moms, but I've heard great things about Prevacid and Prilosec...
