Another Pumping at Work Question

For you wonderful woman who have return to work and are pumping how much are you pumping at each session? Is it consistent? Or do you tend to pump more in the mornings and less in the afternoons?

I've had LO at work with me but he will be starting daycare in a week, today DH did a trial run and picked him up for the afternoon but when I pumped I only got 2.5 oz at the normal time LO would eat. But in the mornings I usually pump the side LO doesn't eat from and I can get 3 oz easy. Any help would be totally appreciated!!! Thanks!

Re: Another Pumping at Work Question

  • Not consistent ... I definitely get a lot more in the AM. I pump at 9ish, Noon and 3ish. I typically get 6-8 oz. total in the AM session, around 4-5 at Noon and 4 and 3. I notice that it slowly decreases. My LO takes in 3 bottles while I'm gone at about 3.5-4 oz each, so I just need to make sure I at least get 12 oz. per day.

    Hope that helps!

  • I definitely get more in the mornings.  I pump around 16 oz per day and 8-9 of that comes from my first session.  Be sure to massage and do compressions while you pump.  Keep hydrated.  Eat well.  Keep pictures of baby around.

  • I don't see a difference in my pumping. However, I do not pump very much. I breast feed while I'm at home, and pump about 4 ounces at every session (around 8am and 3pm). I'm a low producer.

  • I'm not sure what's happened with me but my situation seems to defy what everyone says will happen.  I went from nursing most of the day and pumping once or twice a day to nursing once a day and pumping all other times and I seem to be dealing with a slight oversupply now.

I typically pump one side and nurse his first feeding and then pump 3-4 times at work depending on my schedule that day and then another time at home before bed.  In the morning if I have to bottle feed for some reason and I pump that session I'm now getting about 12+ oz total, LO eats about 4 1/2 to 5 oz.  The rest of my sessions I get around 6 oz total each time.  Sooo because I'm getting more than I need, I am not super consistent with keeping to schedule.  Sometimes I pump 3 times at work and some days 4.  I would say to start off, try to be consistent and see how your body responds.  If you don't seem to be getting enough, maybe add in an extra session (like pumping right after nursing LO in the morning).

  • I am pumping 3x at work 930, 1230, 3pm. I get about 4-5oz at each one. I also pump before I go to bed and first thing in the morning. DS eats 4oz per feeding so I am more then covered.
  • I feed DS at 745, pump at 930 (4-5oz), pump at 1230 (4-5 oz), feed DS at 4ish. I pump in 15 min including set up and clean up and I feel like that's fast. 10 min wouldn't be enough.

  • With DD I always pumped more in the mornings...which is typical.  With DS though, for some reason I pump more at my 3pm session--but the amounts are very close

I usually get about 6-8oz per pump session.  With DD I would get around 10 my first session but only about 3 my last session of the day.

I am so with you, I have a major over supply. But anyways, this is my schedule and how much I make on average:

I feed LO before I come to work

I pump at 10 ish and usually get about 15 oz

I go home and feed LO at my lunch time

I pump again at 3 sih and typically pump anywhere from 8- 10 oz

and of course put LO on the breast on demand while at home for the night.

  • Thanks ladies! I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes once I start pumping all work day, hopefully I'll get more in the morning which seems the norm.
