Short nap versus no nap

I keep running into this problem (as we speak) that DD wants to fall asleep 20 minutes before we leave for daycare. I put her down and she falls asleep immediately but then I have to wake her 20 minutes later to put her in the carseat. While she's awesome and handles it like a champ, you can tell she's disoriented and that i'm waking her from a deep sleep. I know that when someone wakes me from a nap like that, i feel like total crud - disoriented, sick to my stomach and overall grumpy with life.

So, what do you think is better? Let her nap while she can or keep her awake till i get her to daycare. The caveat to all of this is that she does NOT nap well at daycare at all (maybe one or two 40 minute naps in a 9 hour day).

Re: Short nap versus no nap

  • If you're still using the infant car seat, can you put her in that to fall asleep so at least she gets to sleep the 20 minutes at home in the car seat and then the trip to daycare?

DS doesn't nap as well at daycare as he does at home either, but maybe you can talk to your DCP and ask that they put her down earlier than they have been, using that "no more than 2 hours since her last nap" rule? that might help her sleep longer

I think I'd keep the short nap for a little longer, she'll drop it when she's ready. Plus, my guess is if you did keep her awake until you left she'd fall asleep in the car anyway :P DS was a terrible napper around that age even though I followed all of the "rules" and really tried to get him on the recommended schedule (up by 7, nap at 9, nap at 1). eventually he got the hang of it.

Ditto that.  Otherwise, I guess I'd let her sleep.  Sounds like she needs it, even if she's not happy to be woken up to leave.

  • I like PP suggestions.  Are they waiting too long to put her down for a nap at daycare?  DS has 2 things that happen to him when he's woken up from his nap.  He's either super cranky (like the night before last where he went to bed at 6:30 b/c I just wasn't going to listen to him fuss at every single thing) or he's wired.

With that being said, neither one of those situations are fun.  Can you wake her up earlier so she gets a better nap at home or drop her off at daycare immediately in the morning?  I realize you're trying to spend more time with her in the morning but it may alleviate the nap issue first thing in the morning.

With DS he's up at 4 am, we're out the door by 4:30, he gets his milk and goes right back to bed by 6 at the latest and then wakes up for the day around 9-9:30.

I was also going to suggeset this. I don't know how far your drive to daycare is, but at least she'll be able to sleep for a few more minutes.

this was going to be my suggestion as well

will your DCP let your DD stay napping in her carseat or do you have to take her out?
