extended BFers

hey there, i never thought i'd make it to 10 months as it is, but now i'm starting to think of beyond the 1 year point.  I have to supplement now because I lost a lot of weight and my supply took a hit, so I BF my son once in the early morning and once in the afternoon.

If you BF your 12+ month kiddo, when/how often do you do it?  does it just add to a regularly scheduled meal?

Re: extended BFers

  • Congrats on making it so far!  We are at 17 months and nurse in the morning and some nights and then in between whenever DS feels like it.  I try for 2 feedings a day, but that usually only happens 2-3 times a week.  I stressed about it for a while, but they figured, you can't force them so it's better just to let them set their schedule.

  • I am not there yet, but planning on it and I have been asking all of my friends who still nurse their toddlers.

My one friend says she bf's her daughter in the morning and before bed, and if she is out and forgot a bottle, or if her daughter is sick, hurt herself, etc- basically if the milk is needed it's there, your body adjusts- it's pretty cool!

  • I've partially weaned...Marlee has a sippy with cow's milk at her meals. She nurses in the morning and during the night (we cosleep) and occasionally during the day if she asks.  That happens more frequently when she's teething, etc.  The moment I stopped trying to have a nursing schedule, it become 1000 times easier.  I did a "don't offer, don't refuse" approach, and she sets the schedule herself.
  • I'm just past that point but I nurse him in the morning and the evening and usually once during the day. Honestly - the one during the day ds could care less about. If we're out and around he doesn't get it and doesn't miss it. Also if he wakes up in the middle of the night, I usually nurse him then.

  • I'm just past a year too ... but we started cows milk with lunch and then she nurses before naps and morning and night (makes for 2-3 nursing sessions/day) and then sometimes when she wakes up in the middle of the night she'll nurse.

I don't really worry about it - I figure she'll let me know what she wants to do.

  • Marking, since we're venturing down this road ourselves. :)
