Didn't see that one coming...

We had our WTF appointment with the RE today to discuss my last cycle (well all of my cycles really) and our plan from here on out. I went in prepared to discuss how my uterus is clearly defective and then out of left field the RE tells me that after reviewing my fresh IVF cycle I have poor egg quality. EXCUSE ME? I told him that this was the first time I had heard of that and he said that they normally wouldn't tell a patient that unless they had problems with implantation or multiple c/p's (ummm, hello, that's me). It turns out that out of the 20 mature eggs they retrieved only three were of good quality.

So after picking my jaw up off the floor and asking all of the semi-intelligent questions I could muster considering my head (and heart) were reeling from this bomb shell, we came up with a plan. We're going to do two more cycles to use up the four frozen embies we still have, if I get pregnant, great. But if I don't we'll move on to another fresh IVF. I am going to start supplements of Co-Q10 and Vitamin D now which have been shown to have an impact on egg quality. He told me that he wouldn't be surprised if I had low levels of Vitamin D because of our geographic location (less than sunny Upstate NY).

We're also likely going to spring for genetic testing. He told us that it's definitely not necessary, but we would weed out any embryos that aren't viable right off the bat using PGD.

Blagh, part of me is ecstatic that I don't have a uterus problem (or likely don't), but part of me is worried about the quality of my eggs. And a BIG part of me is super annoyed that after two c/p's and a failed FET we didn't find out about the egg quality issue until now. I'm just hoping this gives us the info we need to move forward.

Thanks for listening :-)

  • Whoa - that's a lot to take in. I would be so frustrated that they knew or suspected this was a problem and didn't say anything. I'm glad you know now and have a plan to move forward.

  • oh Nmartin Im sorry ... does your RE publish their statistics for IVF pregnancies. i think its odd that they did not tell you this before either.

just wondering - also one thing to remember It just takes one egg- so out of 20 there were 3 good ones and really you just need one of those eggs to be super good...  I am rooting for you - and cheering you on and sending good vibes your way..

We have friend who are in the IVF process and  the one who is harvesting is in her mid 40 and had a historectomy she has eggs still and is gonna try to harvest to have her partner carry. Due to her AMA ( advanced maternal age ) and previous issue it might be tough but we told her the same thing you just need one good egg.

We did IVF as well and we had quite a few eggs but out of them al there were only 4 good ones - we ended up with twins but the other two eggs did not mature so ...just think one good egg...

I am interested to know about the vitamins

    thinking of you ...

     HUGS!!!!

  • I"m so sorry :(  The whole thing can be insanely fustrating.

But i'm so glad you shared - you made a lightbulb go off in my head.  I had no idea about the Vit D connection....and, well, DW has had 2 unsuccessful IVFs with poor egg quality both times (we had no idea why) and her PCP just prescribed her Vit D pills because they recently discovered its very low.  Holy sh!t.

  • I'm sorry that you're needing to deal with all of this, but at least your doctor knows what it is and has a plan!!  Good luck - I really hope the next FET is it!
