Birthday cakes (NoVa)

I'm looking for a baker or bakery to make a birthday cake and 2 smash cakes for my twins' first birthday party next month.  Does anyone have a recommendation, ideally in the Alexandria/Springfield area?  TIA

Re: Birthday cakes (NoVa)

  • We love the cakes at Hollin Hall Pastry shop in Alexandria.  They did our wedding cake and we have had them do fondant themed cakes for birthdays too (I know, over the top) - so hungry hungry caterpillar, sesame street, and a cutesy "she's 1" polka dot cake.  We love the cake iteslf, and they have a gluten free one so that is why we shell out the money and drive 45 minutes each way.  That being said, they aren't  like cake boss, so you need to come to them with ideas and pictures.  They usually execute pretty well.  Even if not the exact picture, it looks good.  They don't really do sheet cakes I don't think, but could do a buttercream smash cake I assume.

  • We get all of our work cakes from either Wegmans or Pastry Xpo in Merrifield.  The latter is pricy but really delicious.  I also love the treats at Natalia's Elegant Creations in Falls Church City.  I have had friends get birthday and smash cakes at Whole Foods.  I thought they were on par with Wegman's in terms of flavor.
  • We used Harris Teeter and the cake was yummy.

  • I've used Wegman's (with the whipped cream icing) and the cake was yummy.
