Cloth Diapering

cheaper?

Has anyone done the math and figured out if cloth diapers are cheaper than disposable?

Re: cheaper?

  • Of course. Have you Googled?

Here's the first (of many) things that came up when I searched "cloth vs disposable cost": https://www.diaperdecisions.com/pages/cost_of_cloth_diapers.php

  • I did the math and my diapers will have paid for themselves by the time LO's about 10 months. After that we'll basically be diapering for free! (not to mention you can resell them when your done)

  • I keep a spreadsheet (geek) of everything I buy/sell and while I still have the bulk of what I have bought, I will also sell it back at the end, thereby making it TONS cheaper.  I'll lose some money on it, ultimately, but definitely not very much.  I have bought everything used or on sale for the most part.

  • If it wasn't cheaper, we'd all wear disposable clothes.
  • I really like the calculator on this website:

    https://www.diaperpin.com/calculator/calculator.asp

We've went very economical with our CDing (flip covers and prefolds) and I like that I was able to plug-in my own prices for disposables, since I'd often use coupons.  I also added in a few cents for wipes (on the disposable side), since I use several per change and I made DIY cloth wipes with materials already on hand.

This is what the website says for us:

    Savings calculated:
You will break even in 10.53 weeks or 2.42 months.You will save $155.06 in 6 months. You will save $328.44 in 10 months. You will save $415.12 in 1 year.

You will save $675.19 in 1 1/2 years.

  • Diapering my son for 34 months cost us about $2700.  When L's stash is all said and done, plus accessories, we'll have spent about $700.  Done.

  • I've invested about $400 with LO#3 and I'm done.  I invested about $100 with LO #2 in covers and preflods and only CD'd at home b/c I didnt think daycare would allow.  With LO #3 daycare said they'd accept pockets so I went for it.

I can resale my diapers later and save even more.  Cant beat that!
