I suppose I will get my answer tomorrow at DD's 9 month appt. but we went in last week because she had pink eye and I noticed she had really only gained a little over 1 pound since right after Thanksgiving, the doctor said she was still following her line right down the middle, but when I plotted her weight it said she was in the 10th percentile! So either I'm missing something or the pedi is lying to me? She has always been right down the middle, so she has been on the smaller side but I never thought it was this low.
Re: is 16.5 pounds really small for a 9 month old?
Well my son was almost 17lbs at his 4 month apt and she said he was 65%
10% is not a bad thing though...it just means she is small that's all
My DD#1 weighed 16.5lbs at 9 months old. She was a very active baby. By 9 months, she was walking and into everything. She started crawling at 5 months, so between 6-9 months she gained only 1lb. Our pedi was never concerned because she was ahead of the curve developmentally. She now is 2 and weighs 24lbs and she's totally healthy and normal, and since 1 year old has not been above 10% for weight. I actually think at 2 years old she was 2nd percentile, and he still was not concerned because she's healthy and still ahead of the curve in her development.
DD#2 is 6 months and 14lbs, I'm betting she's probably going to be about 16-17lbs by 9 months also.

DD1 was about 17 lbs at 9 months, and now at nearly 2 is probably only 25 lbs soaking wet
She has been 25% for weight since 6 months old. DD2 was only 11 lbs 11 oz at 4 months (12%). Some kids are just small, and as long as they're healthy it's nothing to worry about.
Like PP said, their weight gain begins to slow a bit after 6 months (and even more so after 12 months), and once they become more active (crawling, scooting, cruising) they tend to thin out a bit. I wouldn't worry unless you notice her development suddenly slow or she starts to lose weight.

My son is 15 pounds at 8.5 months. He's in the 3%. It used to bother me even though I knew he's happy/healthy and digesting more than most people can imagine... and active as all get-out!
Smaller side, larger side... every baby is different and they could be tall at one point and another short... Growth comes in spurts. My DH was slow to hit his growths growing up, I was faster. When my pedi says he's great he explained last appt -- they're not comparing as much to 'other' babies as much as just comparing his past growths to his current. I decided I'm going to start doing the same so now the numbers don't bother me as much.
I have a healthy baby and for that I am more than thankful
so i wouldn't say 'really small' I would say just 'smaller than the average'
No, not really small. Actual weight % doesn't matter, only that the overall growth pattern for your child is relatively consistent (e.g., a 5% baby stays around the 5%, or a 95% baby stays around the 95%). It's a big jump or fall in % that will get a pedi's attention. Like others have said, it's normal for babies to fall in % between 6-9 months--they are getting mobile and not yet really consistent with their solids intake.
If she's happy and meeting all of her developmental milestones, weight really doesn't matter much in and of itself.
Does anyone know of a website where you can plug in your LO's weight and length and produce the percentage? I know you get this at the dr's office, but was wondering if anyone had a website?
This is the one we use. It only gives ranges, but still good and seems to measure out to what our doctor tells us. I also like that it gives you % for weight vs height also, since DS is so tall, it's nice to see where he equates to others his same height.
DD was 6lb 4oz at birth and continued to stay on the 10th percentile for height and weight consistently. Until about a month ago, apparently her reflux got worse and she wasn't really eating and she dropped off the charts. Her pedi wasn't too concerned about the weight lose, but the GI we saw for her reflux this week was (especially since she's off the charts now).
I would keep an eye on it but not be too concerned yet. If she growing in legnth that might contribute, but my DD hasn't grown in height in 4 months.
Right now she's 8 months and 13 lb 13 oz and 24 inces...
Interesting...my son is 17 pounds and 7 months and we were told 25th percentile....
there are different charts for boys and girls
