1st Trimester

Teachers: Creative way to tell students?

Hi Ladies. So I have my first tri sceen in 2 weeks. I want to tell my students right after that since I will be right out of the 1st trimester. They already seem suspicious but I want to officially tell them and get a reaction. We saw the little one two weeks ago at 8 weeks with a heartbeat of 170 and looking great but we are still cautious because I suffered a miscarriage before. They are 9th and 12th graders. What do you guys think? Have you told your students and if so, how did you do it. Thank you in advance!

Re: Teachers: Creative way to tell students?

  • The only students of mine I have told is my Drum Line.  They were such a source of strength and support for me during the cancer/chemo (especially my seniors) that I wanted them to know what's going on with me so they can support me and keep my stress level low.  They also know how to keep a secret.

When I announce to the band and my 8th grade orchestra I am going to make a power point presentation with the ultrasound pic, show it too them and let them put it together then once they figure it out I'll give the specifics.  Actually come to think of it I'll have my DL boys do it for me cause they made an awesome one for me at the end of last school year.

  • I'm not telling my students until they ask.  At some point I figure they will say "when is your baby due?"  and I will say "my babies are due in August".  That will probably end my class that day :/

  • I was teaching 3rd grade during my 1st pregnancy. They began to get suspicious when I was around 14 weeks. One girl asked me straight up if I was pregnant and when I told her yes, she said "oh good, the class thought you were just getting fat"! Gee thanks little one! Then of course all the little whispers started about sex and what not.

  • I had my ultrasound on the SMART board when they walked in and just waited/watched them react. It was so awesome to watch their faces!

  • I think I'm going to just wait for someone to ask.  Once one class finds out they will all find out rather quickly.

I definitely won't be showing them the ultrasound, I can just imagine the crazy parent phone calls the Principal would get.  I teach at a very uptight and wealthy school... the parents are wack!

Funny story... I teach 8th grade.  Last year when my co-teacher told the class she was in fact pregnant one of the kids went "eww that means you had sex!"  We burst out laughing!

  • A few years ago when one of the other teachers on my team (high school) was pregnant, I made a genetics lesson where we were looking at pedigrees and different traits, and trying to determine what traits a baby would inherit from its parents. The traits were from the other teacher and her husband (who also worked at our small school), and we announced to them at a group meeting that the genetics lesson we had the day before was for this teacher and her baby. It was pretty cute.

  • I teach high school and when I was pregnant with DS I wrote a puzzle on the board...

"Rumor has it, Mrs. ********** is pregnant. Is it true?" BUT it was written hangman style so they had to figure it out.  Lots of fun!  And the reactions were the best!
