I am going to be induced (no date set yet) and had a couple of questions that I'd never even thought to ask my doctor.
When you get induced, do you have options as to how you want to do it? Breaking your water/other natural methods? Do they go over different medications with you? Or do they just start you on 1 medication no questions asked? If you have been induced before, how did it go? My doctor said she wants to wait as long as possible while not going past 38 weeks since that may make my cervix more favorable. I'd never even thought about how the condition of your cervix can effect induction.
I will ask my doctor all of these questions on Monday but I'd like to hear from some ladies first hand. TIA!
Re: 2nd time+ moms...Question about induction
First question is why are you being induced early? Complications like GD? If a normal pregnancy, I would refuse induction before my due date (and honestly I would refuse before 42 weeks but to each their own).
I was induced twice with my first (1st time didn't work). We discussed at the appointment that we scheduled the induction. I was dilated to a 3, so my OB felt that going straight to pitocin was the best bet. When 8 hours on pit caused no cervical change, we did 12 hours on cervadil and then another 8 hours on pit with no change. Then I was sent home (This was 41 weeks).
At 42 weeks I went in and did another 12 hours on cervadil. They then started pit and broke my water. DS was born 3 hours later.
The reason they didn't break my water the first time around is that my doctor and hospital don't consider it a medically necessary induction until 42 weeks. Once they break your water, if the other augmetation techniques don't work, you are stuck with a c/s.
Gotcha. Totally understandable. Just ask lots of questions about what the plans are and what the backup plans are so you have a good understanding of what will happen if things don't go as planned.
I would ask what their "norm" is and if there are other options so that you are most informed. Cervadil can ripen your cervix and if you are ready possibly start contractions on their own. Pitocin and breaking the water are very quick ways to get labor started but they can be overwhelming for you and baby as well because of how quick they CAN (not will) work.
I agree with PP to just ask a lot of questions. Write them down and go in ready to get as much information as possible.
