Visiting Austin for Baby Shopping

I'm going to Austin this weekend to shop for baby stuff and maternity clothes.  Do you have any recommendations of where to go?  I live in Waco so our options are very limited here.  I plan to go to Buy Buy Baby in south austin and the Old Navy in Bee Cave, TX since it has maternity clothes.  I'm also considering non-chain stores like Terra Toys and Baby Bugaloo.  Used baby gear would be fabulous.  I'm looking for decent stuff at good prices.  I don't need super fancy things.  We will be staying in Round Rock but are willing to travel anywhere in the Austin area for good deals and a bigger selection.  I have almost nothing for baby thus far.

Edit: Do you know anything about the stores gaga (gagababygaga.com) and wee (shopwee.com)?

Thanks!!

Re: Visiting Austin for Baby Shopping

  • If you're in RR, I'd definitely visit Baby Earth. Call the ON in Bee Cave and make sure they still carry maternity clothes. If they do, be prepared, the selection is very small.

Unless you plan to buy a lot of toys, which I wouldn't recommend, I think going to Terra Toys would be a waste of time. I'd hit up places that give you the most selection such as BBB, Baby Earth, etc.

As far as maternity clothes, perhaps just try going to Lakeline Mall or Barton Creek and going to the maternity stores in there.

I've had the most luck buying Old Navy maternity online bc the selection is so much better. They're having a pretty good sale starting today--30% or more off of a lot of items.

    Good luck!

  • Baby Earth is also nice.  The ON in Bee Caves has a very limited maternity section, I wasn't impressed at all (just wanted to give you a heads up)!

When I went to the Old Navy in Bee Cave they literally had 1 pair of maternity pants and a few shirts... I would call ahead to see what they have in stock before heading that way just to see what they have.  The salesperson told me they usually only have returns there.  (Keep in mind this was over a year ago.)

I would also look @ Motherhood Maternity in Barton Creek Mall (if you are already going to be SW @ BBBaby).  FWIW, I went into Bugaloo the other day for a baby gift and the clothes were OUTRAGEOUSLY $$$.  Not sure what your budget is, but it was more than I was willing to spend even for a gift!

    Have fun!!

  • I would skip Baby Bugaloo if you are not looking for fancy stuff with high prices. They have some great items, but they are really expensive and more on the fancy side, IMO.

  • Kid to Kid also has a small Maternity section.

Thanks!  Even if the selection is small, I really want to try and figure out my price and how the different panel options feel at ON so that I can buy online better since I don't want to have to ship it back ($6!) if it doesn't fit.

OK, maybe I will call.  I will check out Motherhood as well.  My sister and I plan to browse in a few of the expensive boutiques and she is planning to spend some $$ on her first niece/nephew since she doesn't want her own children.  So she might buy something there.

    Ok, cool.

I always found lots of maternity clothing at Rock A Bye Baby Kids.

Good to know! I saw them on the map but didn't know anything about them.

I shopped at that ON about 6 months ago, and did okay.  It is a small section, but  a lot of it worked for me.  I too was mostly going to check sizing/fit so I could order online later, but I found that I wore up to 3 different sizes depending on the item - no rhyme or reason to it.  ESPECIALLY in pants.  So I never ended up ordering online.

  • Ditto Baby Earth and BBB. Another good place for resale is Rock-A-Bye Baby/Kids off 183/Braker. Zoe, the owner, is very friendly and she only takes items in great condition.

I was just at that ON a few weeks ago, and I wouldnt waste time driving out that far.  The selection is so small -  I was looking for mostly Med size stuff and it was slim pickings.  I have discovered that even though it says you can't, you can take maternity stuff ordered online back to any ON (same thing for Gap).
I like Gap mat jeans better than ON . . if you watch the sales, you're likely to get them for a good price.
The one thing I like the best at ON is the ribbed ruched tanks.  They fit great and are long enough to cover my ever expanding belly.  This was my reason for going last time, and all I could find in store was black =(.  I had to order the rest online.

Oh, and if you're interested in baby clothes - Carter's is having a 40% off everything sale right now in store & online . . . there's a Carter's in the Arbor Walk.

  • Also, in RR there are a ton of baby/kid stores at the RR outlets--Carter's, OshKosh, Gymboree....I'm sure you can find a list online.

Really?  I have wanted to buy from gap online but for the same reason as old navy (paying to ship it back) I haven't been brave enough.  It's stupid they say you can't return to the store so if you really can, that's great!

O, Carter's has such cute stuff!  I will add that to our list.

Yes!  We definitely want to stop by the outlets.

I would also check out Kohl's, JCP, and Target for maternity clothes.

Do you know if any of the Austin area ones are decent?  The ones in Waco all have about a 4ft section of clothes so it's super disappointing.  I have bought a few things from Kohls online since I can return them to the store.

I was not impressed with the maternity selection at the Kohls down south.  I have been a couple of times to the Bee Caves ON and yes the selection is very small, but I found some stuff both times I went.  There is also a Target out there with a decent selection and you could hit up both.

  • I'd definitely check out Baby Earth, Pea in the Pod, Buy Buy Baby and the consignment stores mentioned above. There are also some nice baby boutiqes around here that tend to be on the pricey side (Wee being one of them). Terra Toys is great but as the name implies, it has a lot of toys and I think the baby section was pretty small. Have fun!

  • The last time I visited kid to kid/ lakeline location they had a pretty decent maternity selection.

Take this with a grain of salt because it has been years.  But up near Round Rock I did not find any of the Kohls to ever have much of anything.  There is a JCP right next to the RoundRock outlets(same parking lot as Ikea), and it had an ok selection.  The Target at Parmer/35 always had the best selection of all the Targets in the area and it is not very far from Round Rock.
