Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How Early Did You Start Cereal?

It seems like my daughter is getting sick of her bottle already.  She still takes it but not as easily as she usually does.  I feel like if my husband and I are eating dinner in front of her she stares us down and sticks out her tongue like she wants what were having.  She is 3 months and 1 week old, I know typically cereal doesn't start until around 4 months.  Has anyone else started cereal earlier than 4 months? Thoughts??

Re: How Early Did You Start Cereal?

  • I started cereal at 4 months,  Then I started solids at about 4.5.

I've seen on here that a lot of people's Drs say if your LO is looking at you eating and seems to want some, then they might be ready to start solids.

I'm not one of those people that has a strong opinion of when a LO starts eating solids.  I started early according to my mom and I turned out fine :)

  • I started rice cereal at 4 mos.

I am going to try and hold off on solids until 6 months, but LO sems very into whatever I am eating.

  • Do what works for you.  I started my twins on cereal at 3 1/2 months and they did fine.  It took them a couple tries to figure out the spoon thing but I didn't rush them.  When they figured it out, they REALLY figured it out and now are little piggies.  A lot of people will tell you to not start cereal or solid foods too early because it will lead the babies to be fat.  I say do what works for you and your LO.  If she doesn't take the food, wait a couple days and try again.  If she takes it, don't start another new food for a couple days to watch for allergic reactions.  You can always call your Pedi and ask them their opinion too.

  • LO stuck at her tongue and looked at us when we ate at 3 months, but I never thought she was ready for food.

Ditto this.  If you think about it, your LO watches you when you do anything because you are an interesting person to watch to them...not necessarily because they want your food.

I would talk to your pedi before you start anything, maybe wait until your 4 month appt to discuss it?

  • We talked to our son's pediatrician at his 4 month visit and she told us it would be fine to start him on cereal. We started him on rice cereal at 4 months, and now we incorporate baby food into his diet. We end up feeding him half a jar (or 2.5 ounce container) of baby food. He's about to be 5 months on the 20th.

I guess it's just something you have to use your instincts on, and if you feel like you might be second guessing yourself you can always talk to his pediatrician and ask for their opinion.
