Where to buy a kid's dresser?

Sorry, I feel like a post-a-holic today. Any recs for where to buy a dresser for a kid's room that is sturdy enough to withstand use from a young kid, but also not expensive enough that I will get too upset if it gets damaged? When we put together the nursery, we repurposed an old dresser from our guest room that we'd purchased from Target, and it was fine for a while, but now I can see it is NOT going to hold up much longer. So I'm definitely looking for something sturdier than Target furniture. This may rule out IKEA, too, but I'm not sure. It doesn't need to be "kid" furniture. I'm planning to check out JCPenney, but I'm not sure where else I should look. Thanks!

Re: Where to buy a kid's dresser?

  • ours was expensive, we bought it at Great Beginnings but they had it at Baby2Teen as well. We bought that and the crib, with the thinking that the child will use both (crib converts) until college. We also said that if the kid does not like the dresser for some reason, we'll take it, as it matches the furniture in our bedroom as well.

DD moved to what used to be our guest room and uses the furniture that came with it, including an old adult dresser. It's functional (though not pretty) and she does not care. However, she's very girly and I can see her asking for something else in the future.

  • We bought our couch and entertainment center at JCPenny, so I do recommend the furniture.  It holds up nice. We've had both pieces for about 5 years already.

I know this sounds strange to hear, but I HIGHLY recommend going to the JCPenny's in the Springfield Mall.  They have a nice sized section dedicated to furniture.  We worked with Nader when we bought our stuff, and I believe that he is still there.

  • We got DS's furniture at Pottery Barn Kids.

  • have you checked out CL?  Depending on how picky you are re: style, I've often seen really solid furniture, circa 1989, that people are tired of.

  • I think the furniture we got at Buy Buy Baby for DS's nursery is really durable and with the 20% off coupon I think the dresser was around $300 or so, I think it's by Westwood?

We've gotten bedroom furniture at Costco (online) and been really happy with it - the finish doesn't seem quite as durable as the BBB one, but it is definitely better than a Target or Room Store type.  We also got an ottoman, rug, and entertainment stand there and all three were really reasonable and have held up great.

  • You know they say, they don't build them like they used to.  What about going to Goodwill or a furniture consignment store and looking for an older one in good condition or that can be spruced up with paint.  I am certain you could find a solid wood one with dovetail joints.  For durability with the little ones, I think solid wood (not particle wood) drawers would be a must.  Before Upscale Resale moved, I used to go over monthly and they had a great selection.
  • If you do look at Ikea, I looove the Hemnes dresser we have in C's room. It was my dresser before that, so we've had it a good 8 years, and it's held up wonderfully.

I have a Hemnes in Guinevere's room (the short/wide 8 drawer one) and I love it.  It seems VERY sturdy, and I'm really impressed with the drawers and everything, considering that its Ikea.

  • I think that the Hemnes from Ikea is a good bet.  We got DD2s dresser from a barn sale (it's from the 1930s) and DD1s dresser from the Lucketts antique fair.

  • There's a kid furniture store next to Penzey's on Rockville Pike.  I'm pretty sure they have dressers.  I know for sure they have dresser/bed combo type things.  The prices seemed pretty reasonable for the quality when I stopped in last year.
  • We also have the Hemnes in the kids' room and we really like it.
