Our legislature passed a same-sex marriage bill this week and our governor will sign it within the next five days. While it will theoretically go into effect in early June, with enough signatures (which they will most likely get) it will be postponed until after a ballot referendum. While I'm hopeful that it will be defeated (presidential election year, polls show 55% of voter support marriage equality, and there will most likely be a marijuana initiative on the ballot) it makes me sad that I can't fully celebrate this victory. I am however happy all my senators and representatives supported this bill.

Cautiously optimistic.
Yeah, I'm equally annoyed with the referendum plan taking away the excitement of this, but I am hopeful that it will make it through. Here's a tweet from the Governor yesterday...made me smile.
Thank you to the Washington State House--a civil, respectful debate on marriage equality. And a 55-43 vote! Next stop, my desk! -- GovGregoire
