Rice cereal vent

Seriously, I can't believe this is still coming up. But every time the baby has a bad couple of nights my DH starts in on "There's another option you know. You just don't want to do it." How many times do we have to do this?? I'll tell him there is no magical food that will knock the baby out all night, that early introduction of solids has been linked to higher risk of allergies, that our baby sleeps *completely normally* for a three month old. He thinks he knows the solution. Because his coworkers told him it works.

Are we your effing coworkers? None of whom, incidentally, are under 40? No. I'm so tired of being antagonized over this. Ugh. Vent over.

Re: Rice cereal vent

  • I completely understand your frustration. When DH went back to work, he was talking about how I BF and that the baby gets up several times a night to eat and a co-worker said to him, "You know, if you gave her a bottle of formula before bed, she'll sleep longer". No, I'm a firm believer that the baby will wake when it wants to eat and will sleep longer when they're ready. There is no magical cure all like you said to make them sleep. Yes, some babies sleep better on their tummy's and some feel better with cereal in their bottles for reflux, but you do what works best for you as a parent. Don't let him bother you, just know that you're doing what is best for your LO.

  • I agree completely! And I can understand you frustration. Babys do not sleep when we want them too, thats just the fact of life. It is something we all signed up for when we decided to become parents. It is not fair to them, the put them at risk of all sorts of things, just because people say it makes them sleep longer. I mean honestly I work with baby's momma (ha) and many of them actually tell me putting cereal in the bottle usually doesn't make them sleep any longer or get them any fuller, because they are taking in the same amount, it is just something they arent able to completely digest yet.

  • How frustrating! Fortunately DH doesn't do it, but my in-laws do. They are constantly bringing up things like using formula or rice cereal, even water. MIL babysit last week and every time she tells me the baby wants more to eat! She said she almost filled her bottle with water because she wanted more! WHat the heck?! I give her a 4.5 oz pumped bottle. (LO eats every 2.5-3oz and I generally pump about 4oz so I don't think this amount is unreasonable). Babies love to suck, especially LO, and I'm sure the bottle flow is faster than nursing.  Last night my MIL was talking about how soon LO would be eating Mac n cheese. Now I'm afraid to let her babysit...I don't think she remembers when and what babies can eat! :(

This is what I'm afraid of! I go back to work Monday and I my MIL is watching LO and I have to sit her down and explain that when she takes the bottle to force her to slow down and take her time because she's going to down the milk and look for more, even though she's full. 4.5 oz is a lot for a baby this age! I'm going to be sending her with 4 4oz bottles and that's going to be more than enough. It's hard when our parents last did this how many years ago??? They just don't remember or think sometimes

  • My MIL said something about feeding DD applesauce soon. Umm no!

OP, we hear that too from all the older folks. Both of my parents made a note to say I was eating it at 6 weeks and started STTN from the first day they gave it to me.  Well a lot of us here have living proof that your baby can STTN on just milk bottles alone. I definitely credit it to a good routine, not stuffing my LO full.  Maybe you should let DH talk to us since he is easily influenced by others ;) jk but you *can* always play the pediatrician card.

  • I know the feeling. It's definitely a generational thing. I just talked to one of my coworkers in her 50s and she couldn't believe that this baby of mine is surviving just on milk! And can you believe he STTN too?? OMG?!!!!!

Don't listen to what other people say. Do what's best for your baby. I like pulling the pedi card too...that usually gets people to shut up. GL.

  • I completely understand.  DS turns 4 months tomorrow, and DH wants to start him on rice cereal so he might sleep longer (we haven't been getting longer than 3 hour stretches).  Also one of his co-workers recommended formula at night to get him to sleep longer.  Thankfully DH defers to me about all feeding issues, so when I say no, he doesn't bring it up again.

Also, MIL says we need to give DS a graham cracker since he has started to teethe.  When I mentioned we weren't starting solids yet, she claimed that graham crackers weren't a solid!  WTF

  • Ah yes...my MIL is also recommending the rice cereal. I am just like, NO WAY. He just started holding his head up, he's not ready for that!!!

My LO is not STTN yet, max of 5.5 hours, but less lately due to his bronchiolitis.

  • I would ask him when his co-workers obtained a MD or a degree in nutrition.

  • Ugh...this whole topic p!sses me off.  I was just told by a girl at work today that her S/O gave their baby pop/soda in a bottle at 3 mos.  Well, obviously the kid survived because he's 18 mos, but holy hell...that is just INSANE!  I about choked on the pop that I was drinking at the moment she told me!

STFU.  pop?  That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  For a BABY?  Please tell me your coworker is retarded and her child is morbidly obese.
