D.C. Area Babies

oh what a night...

and not in a good way!

those of you who are FB friends with me might have noticed my post yesterday about Warner having been up a lot on Tuesday night. He has a cold and just wasn't feeling well and was having a hard time sleeping. He kept calling for me which is very unusual for my good sleeper.

Well, it was a cake walk compared to last night. Around 12:30 I woke up to him crying hysterically and when I went into his room, his face was covered with blood. It took a moment, but I figured out that he had a monster nose bleed. His nose was absolutely gushing, there was blood all over his pillow and his pajamas. I was terrified, but trying to be cool to calm Warner down. He wouldn't tell me if anything hurt, he was just crying and crying. And to complicate things he now has pink eye (that developed yesterday) and his eyes were partially crusted over (which now I think was why he was really crying). Serious, he looked like a character from a horror movie.

I brought him into the bathroom and started to clean him up, apply pressure, all that... but the blood just kept coming and after 15 minutes it hadn't let up at all and I was worried about all the blood. So DH and I decided to take him to the emergency room (yes, we are those parents who took their child to the ER over a nosebleed). After we had been there around 10ish minutes, the bleeding finally slowed down and eventually stopped. The doctor checked him out and said that Warner had most likely just gotten a little too aggressive with picking (great!).

We got home around 2am and cleaned up all the blood, changed the sheets and went back to bed...it took Warner awhile to settle down, but I think he was asleep by around 3am. Today Warner is fine...we already had an appt at the doctor about his pink eye this morning and they said his nose looked fine now.

Now we're having a quiet day since I'm beyond exhausted--definitely hoping for a drama free night tonight!!!

Re: oh what a night...

  • Oh no!  Even if you know it's "just" a nosebleed, going to the ER seems completely reasonable with that much blood.  I hope you all have an easier time of it over the next few days.

  • I thought you were going to post that you went into labor!

I don't think it's bad to take him to the ER for a nosebleed. It sounds like it wasn't your typical nosebleed anyway. How scary for you--to go in his room and see all the blood! I'm glad things are alright and you guys have a restful day today.

  • Oh I am so sorry.  I don't think that was an unreasonable trip, I would think a normal nose bleed would stop sooner.  The over aggressive picking scare me though.  I can't tell you how many times a day I tell DD to get her finger out of her nose....  Hopefully you and Warner have a restful and nap filled day.

  • oh, wow. i'm so sorry.

tomas has frequent nose bleeds. we found that keeping the heat turned down low in his room, a humidifier and sometimes a little vaseline at hte base of the nostrils helps keep them at bay. the vaseline lubes the nostrils in the event he sticks a finger up there, or rubs too vigorously.

hope your little guys eyes are better soon and that you both get some rest today.

yeah, I'm hoping that the humidifier and vaseline helps from now on. but the ironic thing is that last night was the first time we had put the humidifier in his new room. since he had had that head cold this week, I thought it would help with his cough. and we got the nosebleed from hell, go figure!

  • Oh no!  Maggie used to get a lot of nosebleeds at that age and it does look like a crime scene in the crib.  I probably would have been worried too if it didn't stop after 15min.  Hope he gets over the pin eye soon :-(

Aww. I realized you guys weren't at pre-school pick up and was hoping it was nothing serious.  Sounds like you had a heck of a night.  I hope you both have a drama free night!!

  • how scary!! you did the right thing by taking him to the ER, better safe than sorry.

Having been to the ER with a sick toddler while pregnant, I know how NOT FUN this was for you.

  • How scary!  I hope you have a better night.

I wonder if I can use this story to scare DD1 into not picking her nose any more.  I swear, she has her fingers up her nose more than she doesn't.

  • Hi!

Sorry about the rough night! How scary,

Wouldn't work for a cold but we noticed less picking during allergy season when we put him on allergy medicine.

Good tip about Vaseline, forgot that one.
