Blithe vs Blythe?

In my previous post, the majority of you who commented said that you'd prefer it spelled Blythe.

Any particular reason why?

Is Blythe the more correct/common spelling?

ETA: I prefer Blithe because I don't like how the "y" looks in the middle of Blythe with our last name Hickey. The names that we like with a "y" in them, have it at the end. That probably sounds really nitpicky!

Re: Blithe vs Blythe?

  • I have 2 friends named Blythe and both spell it with Y's.  I've never seen it with an I.  Love the name though!

  • I prefer Blythe and I think it's lovely.

I always thought that was the much more common spelling. I've never seen Blithe before. (And I would be tempted to pronounce it "bl-ith"...like "bliss" with a lisp.)

  • As a name, I've never seen it spelled Blithe, only Blythe.  I know that the word is spelled blithe though.  I figured that's what you were going for.

  • Blythe..  I don't care for the Blithe spelling at all
  • My little sister's name is Blithe. I prefer it with an i, but I think Blythe is the more common spelling. My mom chose the i spelling because it's like the word.

    All this exactly.

OP, I'm completely with you on avoiding extraneous Ys. In this particular case, though, the y just happens to actually belong there :-)
