Delatching during PM feedings

So my little one is 3wks old and in the last few days she's started having issues staying latched on, but this only seems to be happening in the evenings (after 7/8pm) I know it's not an issue with the initial latch because it's not painful and she usually stays on for about 4-6 min with no problems. My mom asked about gas or colic and I don't feel like its either of those because she's not fussy going into the feeding or after the fact, obviously she does get upset when she's not able to relatch in the middle of the feeding as quickly as she would like. She does take a bottle of breastmilk with my DH so I can get a head start on sleep, but that's her only bottle and usually given to her around midnight.

I wanted to see if anyone else is having this kind of issue with their LO or any suggestions on how I can get her to stay latched the entire time. My biggest issue is that she's got so much milk and saliva on my nipple that she's not able to relatch until I've dried it off and by that point shes worked herself up to the point that she's a little piranha and my nips are paying the ultimate price as is my sanity and patience.

Re: Delatching during PM feedings

  • When LOs are sleepy they can get a lazy latch and slide off the nipple.  Have you tried stripping her down to just her diaper when feeding her so she stays more alert?

Also, if you haven't already- try to contact a LC to get her latch checked.  Ideally they should have a nice deep latch so they can't slip on and off so easily.

  • If it's in the evenings there's a good chance it's related to your flow.  It's slower in the evenings and babies get frustrated when the milk doesn't flow as fast as they'd like it.  They often pull off, frustrated and hungry.  The best thing to do is take a deep breath (my best breastfeeding advice Wink) and just keep offering her the breast.  You may need to make her calm down a bit (like throw in a burp session) if she's getting crazy piranha eyes.
