Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro - TTC with hypothyroidism (long)

Hi everyone !

I have been lurking here for a few months now and thought it was time to become a more active member of the community.

Just a bit of our TTC journey so far: my SO and I are both 32 and have been together for 6 years. I stopped using BCP in August 2011 to start TTC. However, my period never came back on its own. I half expected this, as before BCP I was very irregular and had only a few (maybe 3-4) cycles a year. I didn?t mind this so much when I was a teen and young adult, but it definitely caused more worry in a TTC perspective.

In November, on CD 100+ of that first cycle off BCP, I saw my doctor who had me do a whole range of tests over the course of a few weeks: b/w, HSG and u/s. Everything came back normal and healthy, except my TSH levels which indicated I have subclinical hypothyroidism, which presumably explains the absence of ovulation and periods. I was put on a small dose of Synthroid to regulate it. I?ll admit the diagnosis did not surprise me since many women in my family have hypothyroidism.

Although I am aware that it may still take a while to bring my TSH levels down, and longer still for that to translate to more ?normal? cycles, I am quite hopeful now that we have found a cause for my fertility issues.

I have also started charting this cycle, after a round of Provera finally jumpstarted my period in January. My temps are quite all over the place for the moment, which I guess is to be expected until my thyroid situation regulates itself. Still, it's kind of reassuring to have some insight on what's going on with my body.

I have already learned so much on these boards and all your stories and advice have been very helpful during these first few months of TTC, trying to figure out what was ?wrong? with me. Thanks for sharing !

Ps I apologize for any grammar mistakes or strange turns of phrases: English is not my first language.

  • Welcome. I also have a hypothyroidism, once your levels are in the normal range it shouldn't hinder your TTC efforts. Your doctor sounds on top of it so you should be in good hands. Good luck with it!

  • Welcome to the board!

I also have hypothyroidism. I've been on a low dose of Synthroid for about a year now and my cycles are still pretty irregular. However, it's different for everyone in regards to when your cycles will regulate. Hopefully it will be soon for you.

Hang in there and good luck! Smile

  • I have not ovulated since coming off BCP in August. My doctor thinks adressing the hypothyroidism issue should help me ovulate on my own. I am seeing him again in April, so we will see how things are and where we want to go from there.

I have started charting (after a Provera induced period at the beginning of January) to try and figure it out. I am now on CD29 and this morning FF gave me crosshairs, saying I ovulated on CD26. There was a pretty big temp drop followed by higher temps, but I have been fighting the flu for a few days so I wonder what effect that has had on my temps. I guess I'll just have to wait it out and see...

I meant my above post to you. I'm still getting the hang of this.

Hi there! I haven't done any fertility testing; however, I did go in for an OBGYN appointment a few months ago to discuss my irregular periods. My doc said that since I am getting my period (even if it's irregular), my recent PAP was normal, and my thyroid levels are OK (3.0) that I'm likely ovulating.

We've been TTC since June of 2011, but my doc said to come back in August 2012 if I haven't gotten pregnant yet (one year from my last appointment).

She also suggested that I stop temping and use OPKs only. I know that OPKs don't always guarantee that you'll ovulate, but temping was making me a bit nuts. However, as I've learned, not temping also makes me a bit nuts. Stick out tongue

I've heard that as long as your thyroid levels are normal, it shouldn't affect TTC. Good luck!
