I have a 4 (almost 5)-year-old son, and I have never left him at night except for one night when he was a year and a half. How did your kids, especially school aged kids, do while you were staying at the hospital and recovering at home? Did they go to school as usual? How soon after delivery were you able to resume your relatively normal activities with your kids? TIA!

Re: How did your older kids do while you were recovering?
We have a just-turned 5 & 3 y/o and they have had plenty of nights without us (overnights at grandma & grandpa's house and longer stays with them when DH & I have been gone on vacations or to conferences and such) so them being away from us at night will not be an issue. I know they'll be thrilled for some gma/gpa time.
As for DD#1, I am hoping we can get her to preschool as per usual. It shouldn't be too much of a problem but will require some extra juggling after we're home since I most likely will not be driving right away (and do not think I'll be capable of getting 3 kiddos out of the house and to school on my own). Even though DH will need to be back in the office asap after we're home, I'm hoping between him and the grandmas that we can get her school. If not, I'm not going to stress over it. There will be a lot of changes going on, and she only goes to preschool two days a week anyway.
As far as resuming regular activities with the kids, my main worry is being able to lift DD#2. I don't often need to carry her around or anything, but I am frequently lifting her - onto a stool, chair, into the car or cart if we're out shopping, etc. Plus she is a major momma's girl and it's already been tough for me not to be able to carry her like I had been so I'm worried about this post-partum. I'm really hoping after about 2wks pp that I'll be able to do most everything I was doing before, but we'll see how the recovery goes.
We didn't have anyone to watch our 6 yr old so she stayed at the hospital with us - this was in the summer so school hadn't started. My DH works on the river so he was on his off time the first 2 weeks and helped keep her occupied while I recovered but he had to leave after that and I was on my own for 2 weeks. School started right when he left so I was right back to doing everything at the 2 week mark. (groceries, cooking, kindergarten, etc).
I even have a vending job (bread vending) that I do a few times a week for a few hours a day and I was doing that at the 2 week mark. Had no other choice really lol. It went well and I recovered fantastic!!
My parents came and stayed at our home with DS while I was in the hospital. DH stayed at the hospital the entire 4 days, it is 1 1/2 hours away. We tried to keep DS's schedule as regular as possible, he went to playgroup, nursery school and had a good time.
I started to work on not picking him up almost as soon as I got pg because I knew I wouldn't be able once I had the baby, and I was likely to have restriction on activity during pregnancy.
My DS has been really good since we got home, he like to snuggle beside us in our recliner when I nurse DD, and he has been really gentle with her. He does get over excited and will run at me for hugs, I just remind him that mommy's tummy is really sore and he has to be careful.
