Has anyone used...

Sterile Water Injections??

I am planning a home birth and even if I wind up at the hospital, I am flat out refusing an epidural for my own personal reasons.

I asked my MW about methods of pain relief while doing a home birth and she mentioned sterile water injections.  I had never heard of this until today.

Has anyone heard of this or tried it for pain relief during labour?? She also mentioned a TENS Machine, which I had never heard of.

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice on these methods of pain relief??

Re: Has anyone used...

  • This might not be that much help; I haven't used it and I don't know anyone IRL that has used it. But, I do remember seeing the sterile water injections being used for back labor pain on a birth/baby show (not sure if it was a documentary/movie or A Baby Story or what). The woman was giving birth at a birthing center, and her midiwfe injected 4 or 6 "dots" on her back. I think the mom commented that it did take the edge off a little. My understanding is that it works for some women and doesn't work for others. Hope that helps!  I'm hoping to go with out pain meds, too, and I have been considering asking my mid wife about sterile water injections. Good luck!

  • With DD, I researched both of these methods, and found that there is no conclusive evidence either one works to relieve labor pains.  My research showed that sterile water injections are actually somewhat painful, and though TENS units are used in relieving other types of pain (usually back pain in physical therapy patients), there's no evidence that they relieve regular contractions.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with the sterile water injections, since they can be painful.  The TENS unit might be worth a try, but it won't necessarily help any more than any other regular coping methods (vocalizations, movement, ritual, water, etc...).

  • "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" discussed both of these things, if I recall correctly. I only have experience with a TENS unit because we have one at home for DH's back problems. I tried the thing a few times (once this pregnancy for sciatic pain at the advice of my OB) and hate it. I don't particularly enjoy the little jolty shock feelings.

  • Never heard of the injections but I've used a TENS machine before during physical therapy for 2 separate things (once for back and again a few years later for my collar bone) and for the back it was great and if I could get one for relief, OH MAN! HEAVEN!

  • I have used a TENS in the past for my back pain - but my dr has told me to keep clear of all of that stuff as they don't want any sort of any current reaching the baby (not that it will - but there aren't a ton of studies on it apparently?)
