preemies and rsv lockdown in military life?

Just wanted to see if anyone here had experience dealing with raising a preemie and military life, specifically with regard to RSV lockdown.  How did you handle it without family around?  Concerned about possible deployment and can't use the CDC.  Don't want to bring in other parents/babysitters for fear of RSV transmission.  Any ideas how to handle when by yourself (specifically commissary runs, etc.)?

  • I dont think I quite understand your question.

If you're asking how to do errands and such I would ask someone else to do it for you or you can always just go and put a blanket over the baby carrier. My son was born at 35 weeks and I just did it. I put a blanket over the carseat and was very frank with random folks wanting to look. I just said NO!

  • For the commissary I just either put a blanket over the carriers or pulled all the shades up on the stroller so they blocked the carriers. We made sure, really DH, the minute he came inside from work, wash hands, change clothes, wash hands again.

  • I think that you find a sitter who you love and treat them the way you would treat your DH coming home from work.  When the sitter arrives have her immediately wash her hands, and if you choose, have her bring a change of clothes that she puts on when she gets there.  Seems odd on the surface, but when you interview sitters explain the situation.  Hopefully they will be understanding.

If others preemie moms are utilizing family members during their "lock downs" and having their husbands come home from a germy work-place I dont' think your situation is that much different.  Yes, deployments suck.  But I never once used the CDC when my DH was deployed last year and managed to get everything done.  I just had a wonderful sitter who came a few times per week.

  • My baby was born and discharged home with me at 35 weeks. My husband was TDY and I had no local family. He went everywhere... Target, the grocery store, restaurants. He went to Target the same week he was born. I didn't have a choice. I didn't let strangers touch my kid and I tried to not take him out of the carrier while in stores/restaurants.

  • I am also curious about how premature.  I had a 35-weeker and she went to daycare at 12 weeks.  No issues.  But if you are talking about a pre-28 weeker I can understand the "lock down" mentality.  I still think you are fine having a normal babysitter to get your errands done :).  I just think you might go a tad stir crazy!!!

  • Thanks :).  She was barely 31 weeks and stopped breathing just after birth so we're really careful with respiratory issues.  She is getting Synagis but will be done soon. Totally understand that grandparents, etc. can stil get her sick but just concerned with hiring a babysitter since it seems to be difficult to explain to people just how important it is that they're not sick around her.   We get a lot of "well, kids need germs" from friends that we already know, whereas the family mostly gets it, esp. since they saw her a few days after she was born.  Thanks for the input though, it is much appreciated!
