"never leave baby unattended"

How do you interpret the instruction to "never leave your baby unattended"?

I'm just curious.  It's a simple enough thing to say, but what does it actually mean to you?

For example, I know not to leave LO "unattended" in his bouncy seat.  But that could be interpreted as stay within 3 feet of him, within 10 feet, within sight of him from a different room...etc.

Re: "never leave baby unattended"

  • I think it depends on what you do with baby.  If he is on the change table, I would say always keep a hand on him.  On a bouncy seat within sight of him etc.

I bought a couple onesies the other day that said on the label "not for sleeping in". That confused the heck out of me.  It is plain, nothing that can pose a strangulation/suffocation hazard.

  • I think the onesie thing is because there are federal regs about childrens sleepwear being flame retardant.
  • In my case I tend to interpret it differently for every situation. Baths and changing tables I always keep my hand on her. Exersaucer, swing, etc, I stay within a few feet for the first few times it's used, within sight for a day or two and afterwards don't really worry about it. Of course we haven't gotten to the point of having to worry about her escaping things. That might change things a bit. The only thing she can do now is climb over the boppy during tummy time, but then she's just on the floor which is fine.
  • I agree with it depending on the situation. I use the bouncy seat and jumparoo to hold her while I'm pumping if she is in an active mood and won't lay still next to me.

Unless she's asleep in her crib, though, I'm pretty much always in the same room with her or darn close to it.

Yup. Clothes either have to be flame resistant or closely fitting for babies to sleep in. All baby clothes are flame resistant unless otherwise noted.

OP, in a bouncer I would say within sight. By the time my LO will be moving too much to safely be in it, he'll meet the weight limit on it.

  • Like PPs if he's in the tub I keep a hand on him, if he's in his swing I stay in the same room for the most part. If I'm out of the room it's only for a couple minutes, starting laundry or doing dishes, and I check on him about every 2 minutes (i'm super paranoid.) 90% of the time I'm right next to him though or he's in my lap. I even keep him in my sight when I go to the bathroom.  If I'm taking a shower he's in his vibrating chair in the bathroom with me where I can watch him.
  • I usually put DD in her crib if I need to do something where I can't watch her. If she's sleeping in her bouncy seat, I'll leave the room briefly. I keep her strapped in if I'm not sitting right in front of her.

  • I always took it to mean not to leave unattended in an unsafe situation such as a car, tub, up high, etc.

I would consider a bouncy seat/swing safe since you can buckle them in (not that their going anywhere at this age) so "unattended" in them to me would mean you are too far away to hear them crying.

  • Never leave baby unattended where danger is imminent.

  • I try to be in the same room when he's awake, but I've left him strapped into bouncy for a minute here or there while I get things done. Generally I'll move the bouncy to the room I'm in, but if it's only a few minutes and I can hear him I don't stress.
