two Saturdays ago someone knocked on our door at midnight. We didn't answer, but the guy saw DH looking through the glass on the door and left. We called the cops who came and looked around but didn't find anything. A couple of hours later DH woke me up saying that there were cops in front of our house. Sure enough, two cop cars were parked in front of our house with their lights flashing. A few minutes later a police helicopter started flying around our neighborhood.
Turns out the guy who knocked on our door did the same thing to someone down the street. When the neighbor didn't answer, the guy broke in to his house. The neighbor heard someone moving around his house, came into the living room, and the robber ran out of the house. Luckily nothing was taken and no one was hurt. But still!
The police said that when people knock you don't have to answer, but it's still good to turn a light on or do some other thing to make it obvious someone is there. Since I work at home, I never answer the door during the day. But now I make it obvious someone is home. And we don't try to discourage our dog from barking when someone knocks now.
Just thought I would share!

That is so effing scary. And I agree 100% with the quoted portion. We had an attempted break in at our Austin house when DS was just a baby. 1pm, they knocked on our door, and I didn't answer - I thought that was the safe thing to do. When they were positive nobody was home they grabbed a crowbar and started trying to bash the door in. The responding officer told me to ALWAYS make it known someone is home, whether that be by yelling to go away or looking out the window or whatever.

The north-central stuff has been going on for a while. That's a significant part of the reason that we moved in the last month. I know crime comes in waves, but it got too out of hand for us. Stay safe!!

Yes, that's my understanding too. I live in Allandale, and while there has definitely been an uptick in things like car break-ins over the past 2 years that we've lived there, it's not necessarily violent crimes in that part of the neighborhood, though there have been a few isolated incidents of home burglaries and a store I believe. I feel very safe in the neighborhood, but anytime you live in the city, you're going to experience higher crime rates (as opposed to my farm hometown, for example, where nothing ever happened).
I can't speak for Crestview or Brentwood though.
