Advice from other teachers/professors...

I'd like ANY advice on staying comfortable/hydrated/fed from others who are on their feet all day while essentially yelling! I figure I need to ditch the heels now - any other advice? Thanks!

  • I have a water bottle with me at all times and I snack shamelessly during class? I might have spoken with my mouth full a couple of times..

I honestly think my students (middle school) know, but I'm keeping quiet for a few more weeks.

  • I kept food at my desk and ate throughout the day (trail mix, grapes, ... simple foods like that). I also had a huge Nalgene bottle that I filled frequently.

I also had an extra shirt just in case I decided to barf that morning. :)  One time on my drive to work, I was on the freeway, and I felt like I was going to vomit. I had nothing in my car to vomit into except some plates that I was bringing to school because we were having a multicultural celebration for Thanksgiving. Needless to say, that's what I barfed into....and it was filled to the brim. Like I said, I was on the freeway, and there was nowhere to pull over. So I had to balance a plate full of barf until I reached the next exit. It was lovely. Then when I got to the classroom, I barfed into the garbage can.

One more thing-- I had a connecting door to another classroom. That teacher became my best friend. Haha... She would watch my class if I had to take a bathroom trip. I don't know if you'd be that lucky to have a connecting door to another classroom. GL!

  • I'm a traveling teacher (5 buildings in one day) so my car is chock full of snack foods.  I pack a large lunch with fruit and whatnot to snack on when I get back to my office and keep my water bottle handy at all times.  I also have chamomile & mint tea bags at school to make tea with, need to get some honey there.

  • I teach kindergarten, so it's hard to leave my room, but the teacher across the hall has been good about keeping an eye out if I have to run out.  I can't do water right now. Lemonade is the only thing that I have been able to drink, so I keep a glass of it with me and sip constantly. I also snack non-stop, either on sour patch kids or crackers or something small.  The kids don't seem to notice much. They're pretty oblivious and self-centered at 5 though. ;-)  With DS, I went through my 1st tri in the summer and it was so much easier b/c I could just nap and puke and snack all day!

  • Not sure what level you teach, but I teach high school LA, and I purposely planned more group projects toward the end of my pregnancy so I could sit more while they were working on their own.  I sat on my table at the front of the room and always had my legs propped up in another chair to avoid some of the swelling.

I hate sitting while teaching, but I had to get used to it, and the students were fine as well.

  • This is the perfect time for you to do some PBL!  Thankfully we are in the "student work time" portion of our current project in my class and I get to chill in my seat and the students come to me with questions... I have a mug filled with cheerios that I munch on and always have a huge thing of water.  Luckily, we have team teaching (I am the world history part, combined with ELA) so we step out whenever we need to go to the restroom.

You might also let your staff know what is up so they can relieve you when they are on prep and you aren't.  Good luck!

The kids always know what's up anyways before you tell them :)

  • drink water and sit when you don't have a class. Comfortable shoes (I wore heels until I was about 30 weeks, then it was all crocs and sneakers). Stop yelling?

  • I snack and sip all day.  I also do not yell anymore, its not worth it.  It helps that I am a complete bia so they haven't spoken all semester for the most part.  I honestly think they know something is up but are too scared to ask so they are just going with the flow, for the most part.

  • I was always drinking plenty of water anyway (music teacher so talking and singing all day!), but now that I'm pg, I find I'm even more hydrated! So yes, I fill up my water bottle and often. I also try to make a point to sit every so often especially I find that my back hurts after a while if I don't, so whenever I can I sit, and I'm always drinking plenty of water and I've cut back on the caffeine which seems to help too.
