Mastitis and milk flow ?

I posted on Monday about being diagnosed with mastitis, and have been on an antibiotic since Monday afternoon.  My symptoms have gotten better, though I still feel like I'm recovering from the worst case of flu ever.  I've been breastfeeding as much as possible when we're home and I've been pumping at work when I'm not with the babe.  However, it feels like I can't empty the affected breast.  I still have redness and hardness. So, does mastitis affect milk flow?  I normally can pump 2oz (I know, not much at all), but the past couple of days I'm lucky to get .5oz per session.  :(  Again, my breast is hard like there's milk still in there both after pumping and after the baby has fed.  Does that make sense?  I've massaged it like crazy, but cannot get more out of it.  When should the hardness get better?  How long does it take for the plugged duct to get better?  What else can I do to move things along?

  • So sorry you are dealing with mastitis after just getting back to work.  :(  It's super painful.

Yes, each time I had mastitis it did affect my milk flow.  It would usually take a few days of antibiotics for things to clear up and for my production to go back to normal.

I hope it clears up soon.

  • i never had mastitis, but i had plenty of plugged ducts with ruby. i would take the hottest shower i could handle, massaging it the whole time. then, i would nurse on all four (yes, like a cow) and take lots of lecithin. i also used a heating pad before and after nursing to help break it up.

i hope you get some relief soon :(

  • Mastitis sucks!!!  I had it last month and I felt symptoms very similar to yours.  I found that some of the ducts were very clogged with pus (sorry...TMI grossness) and once I unclogged all the ducts, I felt much better.  I must warn you though, if you do that, prepare to get some fever and chills again.  I don't know why it happened but every time I unclogged an infected duct, I would get a fever.

  • The thing is that I'm having hard time unclogging the ducts (I'm assuming it's more than one since it's a rather large area that's red and hard).  Also, will there be an obvious difference in milk vs pus?  While it would be extremely hard for me to just dump milk, if there's pus in it I'm pretty sure I don't want to serve that to DD.  However, what if she's nursing and there's pus--is that ok?
